“It was their first time on a boat”

Dana Point Harbor Partners’ Underserved Youth Program Aims to Provide Unforgettable Ocean Experiences and Education to More Than 1,000 Underserved Youths in 2023

The long-awaited $400 million, multiyear revitalization of Dana Point Harbor commenced at The Marina at Dana Point in August 2022. In collaboration with the California Coastal Commission, DPHP will improve public access to the water through both the intricate design of The Marina and the newly developed community outreach programs.

Bellwether Financial Group, a partner in DPHP and the firm responsible for The Marina operations and redevelopment, is spearheading a robust outreach program to expose underserved youth from both local, and inland communities to aquatic activities including swim lessons, ocean education, whale watching, surfing, kayaking, and sailing each year.

Boys and Girls Club – For a majority of the kids it was their first time on a boat.

Since the program commenced in August 2022, the Underserved Youth Program has provided hundreds of underserved youths in the community the opportunity to experience ocean education and activities, often for the very first time. In 2023, the program aims to provide unforgettable ocean experiences and education to more than 1,000 underserved youths. To implement the program, DPHP has partnered with Orange County non-profits including the YMCA, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County, The Boys & Girls Club of San Juan Capistrano, and San Juan Elementary School.

“It has been several years since we started collaborating with the Surfrider Foundation on developing our youth program.  Now as we enter into our first full year, it is incredible that we have more than twenty organizations participating in our efforts,” said Joe Ueberroth, founder and president of Bellwether Financial Group, owner of Bellingham Marine, and a partner of Dana Point Harbor Partners. “My partners and I look forward to continuing this program in 2023 and beyond for seeing the smile and reaction of a child that has just learned to swim or stepped on their first boat or rode their first wave never loses its magic for all of us involved.”

The program includes robust tracking of the participants to measure the program’s impact. The Marina recently welcomed a dedicated community outreach coordinator to measure and track the impact of the program in order to report the success to the California Coastal Commission.

The next whale watching trip with Big Brothers Big Sisters will take place on January 28 on the Manute’a, one of Captain Dave’s Dolphin & Whale Watching Safari’s catamarans.

Young OC Actress wins 9th Award

Kayden Tokarski, a 13-year-old actress who plays a young Julia Roberts’ character in the Critics’ Choice-nominated series “Gaslit,” won her NINTH best acting award — and will play a mean girl in the upcoming ’80s sci-fi “Roswell Delirium” starring Anthony Michael Hall.

Kayden won her ninth Best Young Acting Award on January 12, 2023 from Actress Universe for her lead role in the independent feature film “Apocalypse Love Story.” She also won six best young actress awards for her role in the independent film “I Miss Her, Too.” She won an international Gold Best Young Actor award and Silver Best Acting Duo award from the Independent Shorts Awards, and a Best Young Actress from Vegas Shorts. She won a Best Child/Young Actress award from the Indie Short Fest Los Angeles International Film Festival, a Best Actress Award from LA Independent Film Channel.  Most recently, on January 4, she won a Best Actress Award from Miami Indie Awards. In 2021, Kayden won two Best Young Actress awards for her role in the independent film “Message from the Mermaids.” Kayden won an international Gold Best Young Actress award from the Independent Shorts Film Festival and a Best Young Actress award from the Venice Shorts Film Festival.

Along with winning awards, Kayden is a working actor who plays the role of Becky in the upcoming sci-fi psychological drama “Roswell Delirium” that is set in the 1980s and pays homage to all the beloved films and shows from that era. Directed by Richard Bakewell, the film stars Dee Wallace, known for her motherly roles in 1980s hits like E.T. and Cujo; The Breakfast Club’s Anthony Michael Hall; The Facts of Life’s Lisa Whelchel; Die Hard’s Reggie VelJohnson; and Flash Gordan’s Sam Jones. Roswell Delirium will also introduce viewers to up-and-comers Kylee Levien, who plays the lead, Ashton Solecki, and Arielle Bodenhausen and others.

The film takes place in Roswell in the ’80s when the Soviets launched multiple nuclear attacks on the USA. Two years later, radiation poisoning is at its peak, unbeknownst to the population, and a magical place called “Spacerock” has emerged after the destruction of Area 51. Out of desperation, people have come to believe that this land will heal their loved ones but only if they surrender them to the aliens. While the film is centered around the aftermath of the Cold War, it is ultimately about the complex relationship between a mother and her daughter and how they navigate life post-nuclear attack.

“What I’m most proud of is the remarkable performances we received from our ‘80s stars, and even more so from the fresh faces that the audience will fall in love with for years to come,” Director Bakewell said.

In addition to starring in several films including “My Melancholy Baby” on Amazon Prime and playing the role of 13-year-old Martha Mitchell (Julia Roberts) on “Gaslit,” Kayden is an advocate. She served as keynote speaker for the 34th annual Walk Against Drugs in Orange County last year – spreading the message to tweens and teens to say NO to drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and vaping – and was also a “celebrity” speaker for the 2021 Red Cross LA fundraiser that also featured Mario Lopez. Kayden was also part of the Joyful Child Foundation’s 2019 (founded and led by Erin Runnion) “Be Brave, Be Safe” pilot aimed at empowering kids against predators.

Kayden is represented by Sueanne Edan of Tangerine Talent and Heather Bragg of Established Artists.

LONG BEACH OPERA – THE ROMANCE OF THE ROSE

LONG BEACH OPERA
presents the
WORLD PREMIERETHE ROMANCE OF THE ROSE
MUSIC AND LIBRETTO BY KATE SOPER

James Darrah, Director
Christopher Rountree, Conductor

Warner Grand Theatre, San Pedro, CA
Three Performances Only
 Feb. 18 at 7:30 PM, Feb. 19 at 2:30 PM, & Feb. 25 at 7:30 PM

Tickets and information at longbeachopera.org

Continuing an important tradition of presenting groundbreaking new works, Long Beach Opera will present the world premiere in February of 2023 of Kate Soper’s fantastical and darkly comic opera The Romance of the Rose.  The Romance of the Rose performs February 18, 19, and 25, at the Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro; tickets now on sale at longbeachopera.org.

Soper’s singular compositional voice returns to LBO after Voices from the Killing Jar (presented in 2021) with this premiere that blends an oft-neglected sense of comedy in opera with a genre-smashing adventure story of epic proportions. Soper, inspired by the namesake 13th Century poem, has created a boundary-breaking work that defies all categorization. In a thrilling opus that examines one Dreamer’s quest for a literal rose, The God of Love, Shame, Lady Reason, and their cadre of followers lull the audience into a dreamlike world that deftly highlights the profound juxtaposition of beauty and absurdity in our own human folly.

LBO Artistic Director and Chief Creative Officer, James Darrah, says “The Romance of the Rose is such a singularly unique creation that I hesitate to even call it an opera as it seems reductive. While it plays into our expectations of everything that a big opera with fantastic voices should offer us, it also mocks our own obsessions with narratives and our fear of abstraction. The work quickly plunges us headfirst into Kate Soper’s wild and wonderful sense of sound merging with voice to yield an overwhelmingly original evening of pure theater. She’s also not afraid of comedy and possesses an elegant self-awareness — which frankly seems very welcome in our current moment as audience members too.”

The stellar cast will be led by Tony Award nominee actor and singer LUCAS STEELE. Steele, a multi-faceted artist, actor, composer, and creator who is well known for his award-winning portrayal of Anatole in Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 on Broadway, will make his Long Beach Opera debut in the leading role of The Dreamer. Moreover, Steele will continue a close collaboration with Darrah and Long Beach Opera as director and producer of a forthcoming film project to be announced and debuted at LBO’s Opera and Film Festival in June 2023.

LAUREL IRENE, heralded by the LA Times as “an astounding singer” in LBO’s 2021 Soper opera Voices from the Killing Jar, will star as Shame, and she will be joined by another Los Angeles favorite, soprano ANNA SCHUBERT as Lady Reason, recently described as “radiantly pure sounding” after her lauded performance in LBO’s Giustino.

LONG BEACH OPERA
Established in 1979, Long Beach Opera (LBO) stands as the longest-running opera organization in the greater Los Angeles region. Having presented well over 100 productions in that time, LBO has carved out its space as a leader in constantly embracing the wide breadth of opera’s history while innovating boldly and daringly toward its future. With repertoire ranging from the early Baroque to the commissioning of new contemporary works and world premieres, the company embraces the idea that no experience of opera should be standard or traditional.

This commitment to the future of opera has earned critical acclaim, both locally and nationally, and also secured funding from institutions such as the National Endowment for the Arts, the California Arts Council, the County of Los Angeles, the City of Long Beach, the Mellon Foundation, the Ralph M. Parsons Foundation, the Knight Foundation, and countless others. LBO’s history demonstrates that its purpose is the advancement of opera and operatic repertoire as new experiences, embodied by stating that it creates “opera for a new era.”

LBOs highlights include a long list of premieres, monumental works, and a roster of both creative legends and up-and-coming talent which has resulted in accolades; including the 2019 commission and world premiere of Anthony Davis’ The Central Park Five, which consequently won the 2020 Pulitzer Prize. Other world premieres have included Stewart Copeland’s The Invention of Morel, Tobin Stokes’ Fallujah, and Stewart Wallace’s Hopper’s Wife. Also of note are many American premieres including works by Glass, Vivaldi, Mozart, Handel, Cherubini, Piazzolla, Szymanowski, and more. The company’s fierce commitment to collaborations with composers, vocalists, instrumentalists, dancers, filmmakers, curators, conductors, designers, community partners—as well as its commitment to the evolution of opera as an art form to be more equitable and accessible for all—has created a rich legacy at the company and provided a clear opportunity for growth in a new era of making work. The work of LBO continues as it enters a period with new artistic and musical leadership, with rising star composers like Shelley Washington as Artist in Residence and a multi-year creative partnership with the legendary Martha Graham Dance Company. LBO continues to evolve into a home for the boldest artistic innovators in production, directorial work, and music with a bright future that is abundant with potent and unprecedented creative possibilities.

City Of MV – Accessory Dwelling Units

New webpage provides detailed information about accessory dwelling units

Because of new legislation passed in Sacramento over the last few years, Mission Viejo is starting to experience a consistent uptick in the number of inquiries about and permits for Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs).

ADUs are small self-contained units with a kitchen, bathroom and sleeping area and can be attached to the main home with a separate entrance or located in the rear of the property or above a garage. Over the years, ADUs have been known by many names: granny flats, in-law units, backyard cottages, secondary units and more.

The California Legislature recently said that “…ADUs are a valuable form of housing that meets the needs of family members, students, the elderly, in-home health care providers, people with disabilities, and others. The State sees them as an “innovative and effective option for adding much-needed housing in California.”

Cities cannot legally deny ADUs, and State ADU Law and recent changes to the law intend to address barriers, streamline approval, and expand potential capacity for ADUs to help address California’s housing needs. For example, if someone applies to build an ADU pursuant to State law, the City of Mission Viejo must permit the ADU administratively and is not allowed to require the typical “Neighborhood Awareness” form which alerts neighbors of adjacent construction projects. ADUs must be allowed on any residential site, regardless of lot size, with minimum setbacks – as required by State law.

To help educate residents and address concerns regarding this State legislation, the City created a detailed Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) page on its website. The FAQs page includes answers to questions like: “Is there a maximum size for ADUs; are ADUs exempt from parking requirements; and can my local homeowners association prohibit them?” The webpage also includes links to the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) and has a list of Mission Viejo properties that possess or have applied for ADU Building Permits.

For more information, contact the City’s Community Development Department at 949-470-3053 or cd@cityofmissionviejo.org.
