Most Solemn Holy Day – Bahá’í Faith

0

Members of the Bahá’í Faith all around the world on Tuesday, July 9th between noon and 1PM will commemorate their most solemn holy day, referred to as the Martyrdom of the Báb. The Bahá’ís throughout Orange County welcome everyone to share in the commemoration of this remarkable event from Bahá’í history. While there are two Bahá’í community centers in Orange County, San Clemente and Costa Mesa both of each providing a formal program, each city can choose how to commemorate it. Whether in a park or a private home, all are welcome to hear this story unique to human history. Details of the upcoming events are below.

In the middle of the 1800s, small groups of people within each major religion searched for the fulfilment of prophecies in their own scriptures. Bahá’ís believe that all these prophecies, no matter how divergent they appeared on the surface, point to the same place, time, and events.

The Báb, a title which means “Gate” in Arabic, refers to a Divine Teacher Who ushers in the time of the fulfilment of all the religions. The Báb’s teachings emphasize the oneness of God, the unity of all religions, and the need for spiritual transformation and modernization. He advocated for the abandonment of religious prejudices and the rituals that have become devoid of genuine spirituality, calling instead for a return to core principles such as love, justice, and compassion. His teachings challenged the clergy as well as the political establishment, posing a threat to their power structures. His message sparked fires of fervent devotion and opposition in equal measure. The Báb himself endured imprisonment, torture, and eventual execution at the age of 31. The dramatic events of that day – July 9th, 1850 – are commemorated annually all around the world.

Here are some of the Orange County Commemorations:

  • Aliso Viejo — Glenwood Recreation Center, 25422 Cedarbrook, Aliso Viejo, Noon, program and pot luck
  • Costa Mesa — Bahá’í Center, 1950 Church Street, Costa Mesa – Noon, program followed by lunch
  • Mission Viejo – in a private home, call 949.232.9337 for details
  • San Clemente — Bahá’í Center, 3316 Avenida del Presidente, San Clemente – Doors open at 11:45 AM, program with live music and storytelling, light lunch to follow
  • All are welcome.

LOCAL BOYS & GIRLS CLUB GRANTS OVER $1 MILLION IN SCHOLARSHIPS TO SUPPORT ORANGE COUNTY GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS

0

Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Orange Coast (BGC of Central OC) is celebrating the milestone of over $1 million in scholarships awarded to Orange County youth participating in its College Bound program. The transformative career readiness initiative, marking its 10th anniversary, operates year-round to ensure that high school students graduate on time with a plan for their future.

Since its launch in 2014, College Bound has supported 16,224 students in pursuing higher education and overcoming financial barriers. The program primarily targets first-generation students, who often lack equitable access to resources, opportunities, and mentors. Participants receive individualized guidance, including access to tailored academic support and college pathway activities, financial aid assistance, and career exploration.

In the 2023-2024 academic year alone, BGC of Central OC’s College Bound program served 2,690 students and provided $277,500 in scholarships, furthering its commitment to making higher education accessible to all.

“We are thrilled to announce that in just a decade since the official launch of our College Bound program, we have awarded over $1 million to teens, many of whom are first-generation students who lack equitable access to educational resources,” said Robert Santana, CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Orange Coast. “By supporting these youth through mentorship opportunities and scholarships, we are investing in the next generation of leaders and ensuring that financial challenges do not hinder their passions and educational aspirations.”

The program supports students and also their parents, recognizing that many graduates are the first in their families to pursue education beyond high school. Through various workshops and resources, College Bound equips families with the knowledge and tools they need to navigate the complexities of higher education. By preparing students and their families for the transition of life after graduation, College Bound removes significant barriers facing Orange County youth who might otherwise see college as unattainable or prohibitively expensive.

BGC of Central OC’s College Bound program serves schools within the Newport Mesa, Orange, and Santa Ana Unified School Districts. These schools include Back Bay High School, Century High School, El Modena High School, Godinez Fundamental High School, Legacy College Prep: Ednovate, Middle College High School, NOVA Academy, Orange High School, Saddleback High School, Samueli Academy, Santa Ana High School, Segerstrom High School, Unity Middle College High School and Valley High School.

College Bound paves a pathway to success for many aspiring community leaders and extends its support beyond high school. The program guides participants through their college journey and into their careers by providing its alumni with ongoing mentorship, scholarship opportunities, and resources to ensure their continued success. Graduates of the program have attended and graduated from prestigious universities, including Stanford University, Johns Hopkins University, University of California Berkeley, University of California Los Angeles, California State University Fullerton, and San Diego State University.

With June being Internet Safety Month and students out of school for the summer with more free time to spend online, Cox Communications sponsored a digital safety presentation for nearly 30 youth in grades 5-8 at the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach today.

Southern California-based digital safety expert Jon Moffat of Cyber Education Consulting presented to the youth and covered topics such as being safe online on their mobile phones and while playing online video games. Some key information to the youth included:

  • Make sure your online friends are only kids who are your friends in real life
  • Your parents should know all your online friends and followers
  • Don’t download a free app without your parent’s permission
  • If a group chat turns toxic, block or delete the conversation
  • The average age of online video gamers is 31
  • Don’t give your name, address or location to other online gamers
  • When voice chatting, make sure your setting is “friends only”

A recent Cox Mobile survey found that nearly 1 out of 3 parents said their child had been contacted by a stranger on their mobile phone, and 28% said the stranger referenced their child’s location. THE “WHODUNIT” GUESSING GAME HAS BEGUN AT THE LAGUNA PLAYHOUSE!

HOLMES & WATSON

Written by Jeffrey Hatcher

Directed by David Ellenstein

“Tight and clever and full of suspense!” – Arizona Daily Star

LAGUNA PLAYHOUSE presents HOLMES & WATSON, written by Jeffrey Hatcher and directed by Laguna Playhouse artistic director David Ellenstein.

Prepare yourself for a fast-paced, thrilling, suspenseful story that will keep you guessing until its final moments. In this worthwhile addition to the Sherlock Holmes canon, there are more twists and turns than a rollercoaster!

The legendary Sherlock Holmes is dead. Or so it is assumed. When a telegram arrives informing his loyal companion Dr. Watson that there are three men who each claim to be Holmes, it’s left up to the famous sidekick to take on the case and try to discover if one of the mad men is actually the real Sherlock Holmes.

Comments David Ellenstein, “Some years back, I had a great time directing Jeffrey Hatcher’s Holmes & Watson. It is a thrilling mystery that keeps you guessing right up until the last moment. It was as exhilarating for those of us that worked on the production as it was for the audience that experienced it and overwhelmingly cheered for the wild ride that they had. Years later, audiences that saw that show still tell me what a great time they had.

Before I directed this play, I was not a huge Sherlock Holmes enthusiast, but the play led me to read the Conan Doyle source material and I gained a new understanding for the lasting appeal of the detective. These stories are extremely well written. I became captivated by the detail and specificity of the character and literary style. I became a Sherlock fan. There is a reason Mr. Holmes endures through all sorts of adaptations and across time.

Jeffrey Hatcher is such an accomplished and skillful playwright. His specialty is exactly this genre – so this play bristles with intrigue, humor and verve. It truly captures the Holmesian style and mystery. The idea of a new production of Holmes & Watson at Laguna Playhouse fills me with eager anticipation. I am so excited by the exemplary cast we have assembled and the amazing design plans that will lift this play to its full potential. I believe Laguna Playhouse audiences are going to have a great time with this one.”

The cast of HOLMES & WATSON features (in alphabetical order): Richard Baird (The Rainmaker at Laguna Playhouse) as “Watson,” Matt Koenig (Cabaret at La Mirada Theatre) as “Holmes #2,” Matthew Floyd Miller (Sleuth at Ensemble Theatre Company) as “Holmes #1,” Nicholas Mongiardo-Cooper (Oliver at 5-Star Theatricals) as “Dr. Evans,” Mike Peebler (Hamlet at Theatricum Botanicum) as “Orderly/Moriarty/Inspector,” Alice Sherman (Amadeus at North Coast Repertory) as “The Matron/The Woman,” and Christopher M.  Williams (Tartuffe at Laguna Playhouse) as “Holmes #3.”

The design team for HOLMES & WATSON is as follows: scenic design by Stephen Gifford; costume design by Kate Bergh; lighting design by Jared A. Sayeg; sound design by Ian Scot; props design by Kevin Williams; hair and wig design by Peter Herman; fight choreography by Christopher M. Williams.  Casting is by Michael Donovan Casting; Michael Donovan, CSA & Richie Ferris, CSA.

The Production Stage Manager is Vernon Willet.

HOLMES & WATSON will preview on Wednesday, May 29 at 7:30pm; Thursday, May 30 at 2:00pm & 7:30pm; Friday, May 31 at 7:30pm; Saturday, June 1 at 2:00pm & 7:30pm; (with a press opening on Sunday, June 2 at 5:30pm) and run through Sunday, June 16, 2024 at the Laguna Playhouse, 606 Laguna Canyon Dr. in Laguna Beach.

Performances are Wednesdays through Fridays at 7:30pm; Saturdays at 2:00pm & 7:30pm; Sundays at 1:00pm & 5:30pm. There will be added performances on Thursday, May 30 at 2:00pm; Thursday, June 6 at 2:00pm & Tuesday, June 11 at 7:30pm. There will be no performance on Sunday, June 16 at 5:30pm. There will be a post-show talkback following the Friday, June 7 performance.

2024-25 SummerFest Announced

0

An exhilarating new chapter begins for Pacific Symphony and the Orange County community, when the orchestra settles into its brand new summer home at Great Park Live located in the heart of Irvine

The Symphony will be in residence during the 2024 SummerFest season for five exciting programs, from the July 4 opening concert through the closing Tchaikovsky Spectacular on Sept. 7.

Season tickets are now on sale for the five-concert series and patrons

will enjoy seating at tables of four, where they can enjoy their own picnic or one that they can purchase on-site. Convenient parking will be included in the price of admission.

The exciting return of Pacific Symphony’s SummerFest launches with a Fourth of July Spectacular featuring the high-energy music of Brass Transit performing the music of the legendary band Chicago. The concert culminates in a patriotic fireworks display! On July 27, City of Hope Orange County presents a Concert of Hope, welcoming all whose lives have been touched by cancer. The Symphony will perform George Gershwin’s most beloved work, Rhapsody in Blue, which was composed and premiered 100 years ago. Famed piano soloist Jeffrey Biegel will perform the work. To celebrate the centennial of Rhapsody in Blue, Peter Boyer composed a new work for piano and orchestra inspired by the iconic masterpiece. The new work is titled: Rhapsody in Red, White & Blue and will be given its Califorinia premiere by Jeffrey Biegel accompanied by Carl St.Clair and the Pacific Symphony.

The blockbuster movie Star Wars: Return of the Jedi will be shown on the big screen, with the score performed live by Pacific Symphony accompanying the film (Aug. 10). Principal Pops Conductor Enrico Lopez-Yañez makes his SummerFest debut conducting a program of legendary symphonic film music titled The Magical Music of Harry Potter (Aug. 23). Everyone’s favorite salute to summer’s end happens on Sept. 9 with the Tchaikovsky Spectacular, bursting with cannons and fireworks for the “1812” Overture and will include excerpts from the Nutcracker and the exhilerating violin concerto performed Philippe Quint. It all promises to be the perfect soundtrack for a perfect summer!

“Inaugurating the stunning Great Park Live stage, Pacific Symphony embarks on a captivating journey through the iconic compositions of John Williams, George Gershwin, and Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky, intertwining them seamlessly with beloved classics like the brass-infused melodies of Chicago. We extend our deepest gratitude to the City of Irvine for steadfastly supporting our three-decade tradition of delivering live musical experiences to the community,” expressed John Forsyte, President and CEO of the Pacific Symphony. “We welcome back City of Hope Orange County as our presenting sponsor for SummerFest. Their renowned cancer care, pioneering research and commitment to caring for the whole person aligns beautifully with the healing and uplifting power of music. Together, we anticipate delighting audiences with this summer’s exceptional lineup.”

Irvine Mayor Farrah Khan explained the genesis of the new venue: “In October 2023, after the Five Point Amphitheatre announced its closure, the City began working to develop a plan to be able to avoid a gap in the delivery of live music in Irvine. After reviewing multiple options, the City Council authorized the establishment of a temporary live music venue that can accommodate a crowd of over 4,000 at the Great Park Sports Complex. The facility will serve as the summer home for Pacific Symphony and for the summer concert seasons in 2024, 2025, and 2026.”

“Wherever and whenever Pacific Symphony performs—winter, spring, summer or fall—” says Music Director Carl St.Clair, “we dedicate ourselves to ensuring that our Symphony family has an exciting and rewarding experience. This coming summer will be no exception! As I told our patrons at the end of last summer—I wanted to leave everyone with such a strongly etched memory of how wonderful our summer concerts are that they would follow us anywhere! We are all so excited to begin our new life at Great Park Live!”

While the location may be new, the Symphony continues to offer the same high-quality, exceptional summer experience, jam-packed with great music performed in the great outdoors. In fact, patrons can expect an even more comfortable and intimate experience at Great Park Live nestled within a casual, inviting atmosphere. Warm, pleasant evenings, picnics overflowing with goodies, surrounded by family and friends, all remain part of the annual Symphony SummerFest experience.

Subscriptions are now available for purchase and five-concert packages starting at $295. With a variety of food and beverage options available for pre-concert dining—the evening is sure to sound and taste delicious! For more information or to purchase tickets, call (714) 755-5799 or visit www.PacificSymphony.org.

In addition to the generous presenting sponsorship of City of Hope Orange County, Pacific Symphony is grateful for media sponsors PBS SoCal, K-Earth 101, and KPCC.
