Adam Neeley Introduces Gorgeous Little Things and Announces  New Educational Programming in Collaboration with Laguna Art Museum

0

High Jeweler, Adam Neeley is thrilled to announce the founding of Gorgeous Little Things (GLT), a nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching children and preserving the appreciation of minerals, gemstones and contemporary jewelry. In celebration of the designer’s 25th anniversary, and as a nod to his mother’s tireless dedication to teaching, Neeley was inspired to give back to his community, and in particular its underserved youth, by offering educational tools intended to inspire the next generation of gem and jewelry aficionados.

The organization’s debut comes on the heels of a successful opening of Modern Alchemy, the first decorative arts exhibition to be featured at Laguna Art Museum. Neeley and Laguna Art Museum have united to create educational programming through Gorgeous Little Things that will be implemented on-site as well as in local – and eventually national – K-12 school curricula.

Current programming includes, in collaboration with Laguna Art Museum, a sponsored Art Access: Dig for Gems with Adam Neeley at the Oceanview Mine Saturday, June 8th. This trip is suitable for ages 8 and up. For tickets and details visit: www.lagunaartmuseum.com

GLT’s Mission

At Gorgeous Little Things, we envision a world where the wonders of minerals, gemstones, and contemporary jewelry are not only appreciated but celebrated as a vital part of our cultural and scientific heritage.

Our mission is to create impactful educational programs that transcend traditional boundaries, bringing joy and enlightenment to museums, galleries, and facilities dedicated to the preservation and teaching of these precious treasures.

By fostering a deep understanding and appreciation for Earth’s geological marvels and the artistic expressions of contemporary jewelry, we aim to inspire a sense of fascination in visitors of all ages.

Through our collaborative efforts with these institutions, we aspire to create immersive experiences that not only educate but also ignite a lifelong passion for the beauty and significance inherent in minerals, gemstones, and the artistry of contemporary jewelry.

Says Neeley, “My mother was a teacher throughout her life, and instilled in me the value of education. It is in her honor that we created Gorgeous Little Things; I look forward to sharing our mission, and showcasing the magical world of gemstones, minerals and jewelry to our community and beyond.”

Educational Programs

  • Support for Communities: Museum, gallery and facility exhibitions are curated to serve as immersive learning experiences, inviting visitors into the enchanting realm of Earth’s treasures and the artistry of contemporary jewelry.
  • Continuing Education: An educational blog serves as a virtual classroom, where readers can embark on a continuous discovery of gemstone and mineral science, the history of adornment and contemporary jewelry artistry.
  • Materials for Learning: Through GLT’s online educational resource, K-12 teachers are empowered with comprehensive lesson plans that seamlessly integrate into classroom curricula, providing both in-classroom knowledge and in-person reinforcement of Common Core requirements using NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards).

GLT partnership with LAM: Modern Alchemy Exhibition

GLT designed, manufactured and donated the display cases to provide LAM with the capability of creating future decorative arts exhibits.

In addition to showcasing Adam as an artist, the exhibition was created in collaboration with curator Tim Adams, to include educational components: “STEAM,” an educational discipline that combines science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics.

STEAM Components of Modern Alchemy Exhibition

  • US mining and ethical practices
  • Gemstone cutting/lapidary arts
  • Step by step: design, execution and finished jewelry
  • Gold alloying/fabrication Process
  • Classroom curriculum: provided by LAM education coordinator
  • After school programs: provided by LAM education coordinator

Soka Performing Arts Center proudly presents legendary singer Dionne Warwick

Six GRAMMY® Awards, including one for Lifetime Achievement. A dozen Top Ten singles. Record sales that top 100 million. Burt Bacharach’s longtime muse. The sultry-voiced avatar of sophisticated ’60s pop music. One of the most iconic soul singers of all time. Devoted humanitarian.

Soka University Performing Arts Center is proud to present Dionne Warwick in concert. It’s hard to imagine a better way to kick off our spectacular 2024-25 season than hosting a genuine cultural legend whose life is a rich panorama of styles, interests, and causes.

Dionne Warwick will perform one concert only at Soka Performing Arts Center on Sunday, September 29th, 2024, at 5 p.m. Tickets go on sale now.

Warwick’s spectacular and multi-faceted career is impossible to capture in a few descriptions and superlatives, but her singular gifts and lasting influence on popular music over the last six decades is unmatchable. Consider this amazingly diverse string of hits: “I Say a Little Prayer,” “Walk on By,” “That’s What Friends Are For,” “Don’t Make Me Over,” “Then Came You,” “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again,” “Alfie,” “Heartbreaker,” “I’ll Never Love This Way Again,” “Déjà Vu,” “Do You Know the Way to San Jose.”

Born into a musical family in East Orange, New Jersey, Warwick began singing professionally in 1961 when she was discovered by Burt Bacharach and Hal David during their formative years. She recorded her first hit, “Don’t Make Me Over,” in 1962. Less than a decade later, she had released more than 18 consecutive Top 100 singles, including many of her most celebrated Bacharach/David recordings.

Unlike many Aquarian Age superstars, Warwick had staying power. She enjoyed a major career renaissance after the release of “I’ll Never Love This Way Again” in 1979. The following year, Warwick won two GRAMMY® Awards: Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female for “I’ll Never Love This Way Again” and Best R&B Vocal Performance, Female for “Déjà Vu.”

She reunited with Bacharach and David when she recorded “That’s What Friends are For” in 1985 as a benefit single for the American Foundation for AIDS Research. Gladys Knight, Elton John and Stevie Wonder joined her on the recording. It raised more than $3 million for the cause. Warwick also performed in the all-star charity single, “We Are the World.”

Since 1990 Warwick has widened her explorations and humanitarian activities and secured her place in the pop-culture firmament. She recorded an album of Cole Porter’s music, headlined a World Hunger Day concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall, performed benefit concerts for the LGBTQ community, and participated in shows like “Celebrity Apprentice” and “The Masked Singer.” In 2012, Warwick was inducted into the GRAMMY® Museum in Los Angeles. Her Lifetime Achievement GRAMMY® was awarded in 2019. In 2021, she was nominated for inclusion in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the first time. She is a 2023 Kennedy Center Honoree.

Throughout her career, Dionne has continued to fascinate critics and defy stylistic categorization. Biographer William Ruhlmann writes, “Although Warwick grew up singing in church, she is not a gospel singer. Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan are clear influences, but she is not a jazz singer. R&B is also part of her background, yet she is not really a soul singer, either, at least not in the sense that Aretha Franklin is.” He concluded that Warwick combines elements of jazz, R&B, and gospel, making her a “pure pop singer.”

Perhaps that’s the secret to Warwick’s success: she’s as uncategorizable as she is unique.

Soka Performing Arts Center is located at 1 University Drive, Aliso Viejo, CA 92656.

Ticket prices start at $55 and will be available at the Soka box office at 949-480-4278 and online at performingarts.soka.edu. Box Office walk-up hours are 12-4 p.m. Wednesday-Friday and one hour prior to show times on show days.

THE “WHODUNIT” GUESSING GAME BEGINS WEDNESDAY, MAY 29 AT THE LAGUNA PLAYHOUSE!

LAGUNA PLAYHOUSE PRESENTS THE FINAL PRODUCTION

OF OUR 2023-2024 SEASON…

HOLMES & WATSON

Written by Jeffrey Hatcher

Directed by David Ellenstein

“Tight and clever and full of suspense!” – Arizona Daily Star

LAGUNA PLAYHOUSE presents HOLMES & WATSON, written by Jeffrey Hatcher and directed by Laguna Playhouse artistic director David Ellenstein. HOLMES & WATSON will begin previews on Wednesday, May 29 (with a press opening on Sunday, June 2 at 5:30pm) and run through Sunday, June 16 at the Laguna Playhouse, 606 Laguna Canyon Dr. in Laguna Beach.

Prepare yourself for a fast-paced, thrilling, suspenseful story that will keep you guessing until its final moments. In this worthwhile addition to the Sherlock Holmes canon, there are more twists and turns than a rollercoaster! The legendary Sherlock Holmes is dead. Or so it is assumed. When a telegram arrives informing his loyal companion Dr. Watson that there are three men who each claim to be Holmes, it’s left up to the famous sidekick to take on the case and try to discover if one of the mad men is actually the real Sherlock Holmes.

Comments David Ellenstein, “Some years back, I had a great time directing Jeffrey Hatcher’s Holmes & Watson. It is a thrilling mystery that keeps you guessing right up until the last moment. It was as exhilarating for those of us that worked on the production as it was for the audience that experienced it and overwhelmingly cheered for the wild ride that they had. Years later, audiences that saw that show still tell me what a great time they had.

Before I directed this play, I was not a huge Sherlock Holmes enthusiast, but the play led me to read the Conan Doyle source material and I gained a new understanding for the lasting appeal of the detective. These stories are extremely well written. I became captivated by the detail and specificity of the character and literary style. I became a Sherlock fan. There is a reason Mr. Holmes endures through all sorts of adaptations and across time.

Jeffrey Hatcher is such an accomplished and skillful playwright. His specialty is exactly this genre – so this play bristles with intrigue, humor and verve. It truly captures the Holmesian style and mystery. The idea of a new production of Holmes & Watson at Laguna Playhouse fills me with eager anticipation. I am so excited by the exemplary cast we have assembled and the amazing design plans that will lift this play to its full potential. I believe Laguna Playhouse audiences are going to have a great time with this one.”

Drive Through Pet Vaccine Clinic – May 11, 2024

0
Drive-Through Pet Vaccine Clinic
May 11
Date  –
Low-cost Vaccination/Microchip Clinic – For residents of Mission Viejo, Laguna Niguel, Aliso Viejo, Laguna Hills and Rancho Santa Margarita only.

All vaccinations include a $2 medical disposal fee per pet.

May is National Microchip Your Pet Month

Microchips enable shelter workers across the country to reunite pets with their families. Every pet – including indoor-only animals – should wear a collar and tags as identification. This serves as identification, so if your pet is lost, anyone who finds the animal will know where the pet belongs. However, what happens if your pet gets out of your home without its collar or manages to slip off the collar along the journey somewhere? The pet is left with no identification and its chances of being reunited with family decreases.

A wonderful addition to the collar and tags is a microchip. A microchip is an integrated circuit about the size of a grain of rice that is implanted just under the skin of the animal. This is done as an injection and is nearly pain free for your animal. The microchip is programmed with an identification number that is read by a microchip scanner. This identification number is registered with the microchip company and all registered microchips are stored in their data base.  When an animal is scanned, its unique microchip number comes up, and then the finder contacts the microchip company for the owner’s information.

Pets with a microchip have a much better chance of making it home. When you have your pet microchipped, it is exceedingly important to register your information with the microchip company and to keep your information updated. When you move, updating your information with the microchip company should be on your moving
checklist. The microchip is not effective if the information is incorrect or was never registered.

No matter how experienced a pet owner you are, accidents happen and there is always the risk your pet could go missing. Help to ensure your pet’s safety and return home with a microchip.

Microchipping is available at our quarterly drive-through vaccine clinics for only $20. There is no exam fee or appointment necessary. Our next clinic is from 8:30 – 10 am Saturday, May 11.  All residents from Mission Viejo, Laguna Niguel, Aliso Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita, and Laguna Hills who purchase a microchip for their pet will receive a free gift. Licensing services are also available to purchase a new or renew an existing pet license.

Konrad Reuland Charity Tennis/ Pickleball Tournament 2024

Ominous clouds, wind, rain and chilly temperatures couldn’t keep this important event from happening! The 4th Annual Konrad Reuland Charity Tennis/ Pickleball Tournament took place the weekend of March 22, 23 and 24. The Tournament was held at the Marguerite Tennis Pavilion and Felipe Tennis & Recreation Center. The events are held in honor of Konrad Reuland, a Mission Viejo High School graduate who played football for Stanford, the New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens.

Last year this tournament raised over $40,000 for various charities sponsored by the Reuland group and keeping in step with efforts to support important causes, a $20,000 check was presented to Big Brothers Big Sisters. Last year in the Pickleball portion of the tournament there were 85 teams with 170 players. March 2024  316 players gathered to the Felipe location for a record breaking year of 148 Doubles Teams and 18 Single Players!

As the rain held off last year until the end of the Tournament, this year’s tournament players and volunteers dealt valiantly with off and on rain.  When courts get wet, players have to come off the courts and wait until the rain stops.  Then the  heroic volunteers dry down all the courts with towels, brooms, blowers and squeegees.  The process is repeated if it starts to rain again.

Amanda Bassett, Community Services Supervisor at the Felipe Tennis and Recreation Center sent a message to the pickleball players after the first day of play.  “It may have been a 13 hour day, but the first day of the 4th Annual Konrad Reuland Charity Tournament is in the bag. Despite the rain we managed to play every…. single…. bracket…. !!! Thank you to everyone who showed up to play and brought towels…. blowers from their houses … wrapped towels around brooms…. Shuttled IN THE RAIN with me and helped us save this event. Today we made Konrad proud and tomorrow we will do it all over again.”

From Amanda the next day after the tournament had ended: “Another 13 hour day started at 6:30 AM as we shuttled courts for two hours with what felt like every ladies player in our tournament armed with towels, blowers, shuttles, squeegees, and brooms to dry out our courts… But we did it again. Ladies brackets played and we got Mixed Doubles in before the wind made it really crazy…. We may have spent 90 minutes blowing leaves off the courts for our men’s brackets… But we played. We played an entire 2 day tournament on a weekend where the world said it couldn’t be done… and set a record in the process. Thank you to our amazing refs Cindy Lightner, Jason, Mo, and Maggie. I would never be able to do this without you.”

The weekend started with a jubilant Kick-off Dinner and Auction at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center.

Participants dined on fancy hors d’oeuvres donated by Prego Restaurant.  A delicious Chicken and Rib dinner was donated from Outback Steakhouse, Mission Viejo location.   Not to be outdone with the savory selections, Nothing Bundt Cakes provided the dessert !

The evening started at 5:30 with guests meandering into the building to meet their friends, and the family of Konrad Reuland.  Many of  Konrad’s friends were in  attendance. Guests heard heartfelt stories from the Reuland family as well as representatives from the many local charities benefiting from the event and tournament.

Trish Kelly, Mayor of Mission Viejo welcomed all to the event and then the National Anthem was sung by Katie Valderrama, from Little-BBBS. Then a short video presentation about Reuland Charity was viewed.  Opening remarks were given by Andrew Fine who has taken over helping with these events after the passing of Dave Borelli.   Ralf and Mary Reuland spoke about how the charity came to be and how all can “pay it forward” in supporting this special event which benefits  local charities Spirit League Special Needs Sports and the Mission Viejo Wheelchair tennis program, in addition to Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Orange County, Donate Life Organ Donation Foundation, and the Lisa Colagrossi Foundation for Brain Aneurysm Education.

Speakers were:

Tom Mone  who is the CEO of  One Legacy/ Donate Life

Mary Beth Barry who is Konrad’s kidney recipient

Mark Sanchez/ Retired NFL QB, Sports Commentator and Family Friend

Bianca Carranco  / Big & Little BBBS

Chase Moline who is Defensive Line Coach at MVHS

Hero Recipient – Jonavan Asuncion

Konrad attended and played football for Mission Viejo High School.  Current Defensive Line Coach Chase Moline of MVHS and a former team member with Konrad was there to give an award to Jonavan Asuncion called “Hero Award”, which is an award for excellence in giving of time to serving the community.  It was mentioned that MVHS Varsity Football are the State Champs in Division 1-AA this  year’s football season .

Mary Reuland spoke about what it was like to be Konrad’s mother and to be with her son during his hospitalization.  Those were sweet and tender moments they had together at the time not fully realizing that those would be the last days of his life. Konrad’s Father Ralf and the other speakers spoke about the charities; that Konrad intended to be an organ donor –  having the pink circle on his driver’s license.  He always  encouraged others to do the same, all before his brain aneurysm.  One of the 75 people that Konrad helped survive and prosper through his donation was in attendance.  Mary Beth Barry joyfully talked about how grateful she was to have received the beautiful gift of a healthy kidney from Konrad.

A Grateful Recipient – An Interview with Mary Reuland

Konrad Reuland had a coincidental meeting with Rod Carew when he was a sixth grader in Southern California. Rod Carew is a retired professional baseball player  and considered one of the great hitters of his generation. It was the late 1990s and Reuland told his mother Mary one day, ‘Mom, I met Rod Carew  today! I also want to be a pro athlete. The two families had children at the same school. Little did Konrad know that Carew would end up being the indebted recipient of his heart and one kidney.

Carew had a heart attack while playing golf in September of 2015 and what usually happens in this type of crisis is that Doctors will implant a mechanical heart device and if needed will put the patient on a heart transplant list. What is so miraculous through all of this is that Carew’s wife Rhonda and Mary Reuland put two and two together and figured out who the heart and one kidney went to.  Then the Carews and Reulands had a wonderful meet up.

Mary Reuland said, “The Reuland’s each took a turn listening to Konrad’s heart in Carew’s chest, with a stethoscope. I knew that heartbeat well. In our last hours with Konrad, I laid on his chest listening to his heart. I thought that I might not ever hear that heartbeat again.  With the greatest of ‘Hope’ I had that heartbeat memorized.  In my quite conversations with Konrad I told him that he  would choose wisely from heaven, that he would have a part to play in all this. When I found out that Carew was Konrad’s heart recipient, I had goosebumps confirming to me that Konrad shared in this decision. I have felt his presence every step of the way and this comforts me. I also told the Carew family that  because our son’s heart is beating in Rod’s chest, you are all part of our family now. Rod reassured me that he would take care of his youthful heart and was grateful to Konrad for a second chance.”

Konrad Reuland’s Family

From The Reuland Group:

A Worthy Cause

On behalf of the foundation volunteers, the Reuland family, and the City of Mission Viejo, thank you for choosing to support this event.  Konrad Reuland Legacy

Konrad suffered from a brain aneurysm and passed away in December 2016 at the age of 29. Although he was taken from us so young, Konrad lived his dream. After playing football at Mission Viejo High School, Konrad graduated from Stanford University and played in the NFL as a tight end for both the New York Jets and the Baltimore Ravens. His enthusiasm and passion for life was exceptional, as was his love for his family and friends. Even after his passing, Konrad helped save/improve the lives of over 75 people through successful organ and tissue donations.

We are on a mission to raise awareness for organizations that represent the values that were important to Konrad, and also to honor him. The proceeds will go towards the Konrad A. Reuland “Little” Scholarship, where funds are awarded to a Little in a Big Brothers Big Sisters program with aspirations of going to college and playing a collegiate sport. A portion of the proceeds will also be awarded to Donate Life, an organ/tissue donation entity, and the Lisa Colagrossi Foundation whose goal is to spread awareness and provide support for brain aneurysm research and education on initial signs and symptoms, and risk factors.
