Penny Prol Capistrano Philharmonic Volunteer of the Year

On May 27, Penny Prol, will be recognized at the Philharmonic Committees Annual Meeting as the Capistrano Volunteer of 2008-2009.

The committee was fortunate in 2002 to have Penny Prol join us. She immediately became a very active member by accepting the position of Design House Liaison. As Partner’s in Design this proved to be a very involved job with scheduling and ticket sales. Coming from the corporate world, Penny used her organizational skills and kept us on track for 3 years.

Penny served two terms as Co-chair of the committee, once again guiding us in the right direction. This year as Parliamentarian she had led us to revising our By-Laws and then prepared them for computer access. She also prepares the roster each year. Penny does all of this while also being a very active member of her church and community, traveling with her husband and spending as much time as possible with her children and grandchildren.

We are so pleased she has chosen us. The PHILHARMONIC COMMITTEES are found throughout Orange County and offer music programs to all Orange County schools at no cost to the schools.

Corpus Christi Worship Doc for May 2-3; F. Bailey

May 2-3, 2009
Fourth Sunday of Easter
HAVEN Confirmation
Acts 4:8-12 First John 3:1-2 John 10:11-18

Where do they find the selfless courage to do what they do? The people that run into burning buildings to save others or throw themselves in front of those in danger….the people who risk death by diving into the ocean to save the drowning or crawling beneath the rumbling girders of a collapsed structure…from what well of super-hero strength do they draw? In his day, Peter is portrayed as the resolute and courageous person standing up in the crowd and talking about Jesus.

This is the same Peter who denied even knowing Jesus on three different occasions. How was this transformation from coward to courageous made possible? The hint of course is in the first line from the First Reading…. ‘filled with the Holy Spirit….’…. of course, it is none other than the Holy Spirit, to whom we pray to transform the face of the earth, the giver of seven-fold gifts of grace, the one who danced on the face of the earth as it was being formed, Sophia, wisdom, breath of God, pneuma…. suffice it to say that a little bit of the Holy Spirit can go a long way.

The power of the Holy Spirit is juxtaposed with the imagery of Jesus as a ‘Good Shepherd’, a shepherd who protects and guides his flock, who is willing to give his very life for those he shepherds. History allows us the perspective to see that the testimony of Peter and the other early disciples caused them to be cruelly tortured and killed. Through the blood of the apostle’s conviction the early Church grew and was strengthened, in a way, each convert became a shepherd for others within the community, each having a vested stake in protecting and nurturing the flock. People who had simply been fisherman, tax collectors and women accompanying the early disciples, were empowered by the Holy Spirit to open their homes for prayer and early Eucharist. They found it within themselves to retell the stories of Jesus’ life, especially the story of the empty tomb…and most importantly they demonstrated in their lives that they were completely committed to Jesus and HIS Church. As we welcome the gifts of the Holy Spirit upon 25 of our HAVEN youth this weekend, how courageous are we in ways of faith.

If we are inconvenienced in any way from our personal Masses of Convenience…do we skip the family meal (Eucharist) all together? How many times have we told a coach, a PTA president or School Exam or neighborhood association board that it would not be possible for us to attend a meeting or a game or a tournament or a test….all because it conflicted with something of value within our Catholic faith? Courage is not something reserved for the big moments, it might be something as small as pausing to say a quiet grace before chowing down on the burger from In-and-Out on a Friday night with friends, it might be abstaining from alcohol so that there is at least one designated driver to get everyone home safely, it might be walking with the outcast while others maker fun, it might even be saying YES to God but NO to religion. Roman Catholicism is a VERY big and diverse family, we manifest the Good Shepherd best when we have each other’s back…and frequently that takes courage. Come Holy Spirit…..

Thank you for sharing this weekend with our Corpus Christi Community. In a very special way we congratulate our 25 HAVEN youth who received the Sacrament of Confirmation on Saturday night: Tara Arbogast, Tyler Bolton, Molly Cantwell, Christina Chouinard, Christian Chua, Matthew Dempsey, Morgan Foster, Ashley Gilhooley, Tara Hernandez, Kaitlin Herndon, Jill Jelnick, Daniel Kibbe, Tess Kleinhammes, Molly Lindheimer, Marica Mackey, Matthew Melissa, Shelby Mocnik, Brad Murray Joey Newkirk, Danielle Orlowski, Cassie Paine, Monica Palomino, Stephanie Ploof, Nick Santala, Siobhan Wicks.. Bishop Estabrook, a chaplain of the Military Vicariate with a residence in orange County has been the Confirming prelate and it was our honor to host him amongst us.

Thank you Bishop Estabrook! Please take a Bulletin with you as you depart. Tomorrow, Sunday, May 3rd, the First Saturday Men’s fellowship is hosting an afternoon ‘Spring Picnic’ on the lawn, an opportunity to meet some of the guys and find out the benefits of their monthly gathering. The POPs Camp Out (for dads with their kids) on Saturday, May 16th is approaching, reservation forms are available on the Concierge Shelves…and last but far from least, Mother’s Day is next weekend and special remembrance cards are available on the Concierge Shelves. In all you do this week, have courage, watch each other’s back and remember, you are loved. FKB

Galaxy & Selected Works

Artist: John Szabo

Exhibition: Thursday, May 7-June 14, 2009
Opening Event: Thursday, May 7th 2009, 6-9pm

Artist John Szabo will attend the opening in person.
“A rising star… Szabo’s work is inventive and thoughtful, displaying a great deal of care
in detail and concept…in the vein of Mark Rothko.”
Roberta Carasso

“John Szabo’s new series titled Galaxy, invites the viewer to form a relationship with
each piece by recalling and relating their own experiences, dreams and thoughts about
the wonders of our Galaxy. These works both inspire and demand one to explore the
mysteries of our universe.”

GALAXY & SELECTED WORKS — RECENT PAINTINGS OF JOHN SZABO
(LAGUNA BEACH, CA) In the beginning there were dreams. They began after a
late night of star gazing from an isolated Laguna Beach cove. They became more
vivid and colorful and John Szabo kept a dream diary leaving a notebook near his
bed, waking up periodically, to scribble notes.

The creative painting process began with a few months of experimentation. More of
a chemist than anything else he began mixing, dripping, splattering and applying
different types of inks into heated resin, sometimes using a blowtorch.

He recorded how the ink reacted to the resin, depending on how long the resin had
dried. He began using wooden sticks, blocks, round objects and other items available
in his studio, to apply the ink in a more controlled fashion, taking copious notes.
He began painting and experimenting on rows of small wooden squares, similar to
working in a darkroom, running test strips, before printing the final photograph,
but still experimenting and open to the unexpected, working with “happy
surprises”, even as the works became more controlled and calculated.

The culmination of this process is his current series titled Galaxy & Selected Works.
Szabo hopes that through viewing the Galaxy Series the viewer feels a connection
with something beyond their daily routine and existence. It is his intent that
viewing these pieces as a collective whole, up close and at eye level in a gallery
setting, the viewer enters into a world that transcends, challenges and invites
introspection about the possibilities beyond our world.

Did the universe begin with a
big bang 10 billion years ago? Is the universe expanding? With an estimated 100
billion galaxies in our universe and 100 billion stars is each universe what are the
changes of life on another planet?

Among other galleries Szabo has shown at The Orange County Center for
Contemporary Art in Santa Ana, CA, Marion Meyer Contemporary Art in Laguna
Beach, CA, James Gray Gallery at Bergamot Station in Santa Monica, CA, The Dana
Point Juried Art Festival in Dana Point, CA and ArtExpo Las Vegas.
Szabo’s art has appeared in The Orange County Register and national art
publications: ARTNews, ArtMonthly, Rivera Magazine and Art Business News.
His art is included in private collections and some of of the finer businesses and
restaurants in Southern California.

Szabo will donate 10% of all sales to the Laguna Relief and Resource Center
which provides services and assistance to the homeless in Laguna Beach.

AV Mom Writes About Wood Canyon YMCA

I am a parent and my daughter attends Wood Canyon Elementary. My child attends the after school program at the YMCA.

When I first signed her up I was very concerned as to the quality of the after school program as she previously attended a private daycare in Laguna Beach. I have been so impressed with the quality of after school care my daughter has received and feel that she is safe and is in a comfortable place while I am at work as a working mom.

The Wood Canyon YMCA should be recognized as a top notch after school facility as it is right here in Aliso Viejo. The Wood Canyon YMCA was recently recognized and received Accreditation by the National Afterschool Association which is not received by the majority of after school care facilities.

Below is a description of the Accreditation program and also gives some information about the YMCA and the wonderful staff members. Gianna Flores is the Director and Jessica Wright is the Assistant Director. The Wood Canyon YMCA is truly a secret gem in Aliso Viejo!

Elizabeth Gonzales
Aliso Viejo Resident

The National Afterschool Association (NAA) is a way to recognize quality in school age care programs. Accreditation means that a program has demonstrated substantial compliance with the NAA standards. Accreditation leads to sustained program improvement. This is documented through the ASQ team program improvements made and annual reports on continuing compliance sent to NAA and verified every four years through the Endorsement Visit. The NAA for Quality School age care specifically addresses the indicators of quality programs reflected in current research. Examples include meeting the developmentally different needs of youth, 5-14 years, involving children and youth in program planning, providing positive interactions between children and youth and adults, and ensuring a safe and challenging environment for children and youth in out of school time. Quality programs lead to better outcomes for children and youth. It protects the well being of children, supports emotional and social development for children, and enhances academic achievement for children!

Recently, Wood Canyon YMCA, which is located on campus of Wood Canyon Elementary School, went through this process of becoming Re-Accredited. The YMCA was first Accredited in 2005, and recently announced its Re-Accreditation achievement in March 2009. Wood Canyon YMCA is one of three YMCA’s in Orange County, and one of fifty six school’s in the Capistrano Unified School District, with this distinguished award. We were visited in November 2008 and were scored in categories relating to relationships with staff, children, parents, and school personnel. Director Gianna Flores stated that “We passed with flying colors!” “We hope to maintain the great relationships that we have established over the years.” The staff consists of Gianna Flores, director, Jessica Wright, assistant director, Sheila Tabrizi, kindergarten plus teacher, Kim Brown, staff, Taryn Stiles, staff, Fredy Celis, staff, Sierra Estrada, staff, and Heather Van Roekel, staff. Please congratulate them on their achievement.

If you are looking for a place for you child to feel safe, work on their homework and make a few friends or two…. then the YMCA After-School program is the place for you. The Wood Canyon YMCA is a state licensed quality program to encourage your children to explore the world around them, build strong character values through many of the activities and build lasting relationships with friends & classmates daily. The YMCA also offers a K+ program, which extends the academic experience for your child. This program offers many of the same educational experiences that the child is experiencing in school, yet with a slightly different approach. It enhances their knowledge of the basic learning concepts needed to move into 1st grade.

Y Summer Camp…Amp it up!

Director Flores stated that the Wood Canyon YMCA is gearing up and preparing our summer camp field trips and activities! We will be open from 6:45am to 6pm. We will be going on weekly bus field trips and having vendors entertain the children. Daily curriculum such as art, science, and character building will also take place.

Please feel free to stop by, schedule a tour or just ask a few questions regarding our program. We would be happy to meet you and share with you our YMCA experience. Contact information, Gianna Flores (director) gflores@ymcaoc.net or Jessica Wright(assistant director). We also can be reached by phone at (949) 363-7087. We are looking forward to chatting with you soon!

TIJERAS CREEK DESTINATION IMAGINATION TEAM WINS STATE TOURNAMENT

On April 4, the Tijeras Creek Fifth Grade team won the Destination Imagination California State Tournament in San Jose, earning a near perfect score of 391 out of 400, a full 32 points ahead of their closest competitor. This achievement qualifies the team to join teams from other states, as well as 45 countries, in the Global Finals tournament in Knoxville, Tennessee in May.

The team qualified for the state competition when they took second place at the regional tournament in February where they were awarded the prestigious DaVinci award. In San Jose, the team presented an outstanding performance in the central challenge portion of the competition. The team was required to research animal communication based on a team selected habitat and featured creature and then to present their information in an interesting, educational, and entertaining way within an eight minute time frame.
Tijeras Creek DI members Emily Boggess, Jacob Stanley, Alayna Mason, GJ Harrick, Melissa Andrews, Santino Labate, and Andrew Stelling, narrowed their brainstorming to a South Pacific coral reef habitat featuring the Broadclub Cuttlefish. Their extensive research over a period of four months was presented as an engaging television show entitled, “Two Cool Scientists”, complete with a team composed theme song, a commercial starring Zac Efron (played by Andrew Stelling), and the vanquishing of the villainous Dr. Evil. Team members played multiple roles as various sea creatures discovered during their research.
The state appraising team commended these scholars for their clever script and outstanding costumes and scenery, as well as their musical talents. The team also received acclaim for their entrepreneurial spirit and the celebration of team created inventions and forward thinking technologies presented within their solution. We are very proud of these Tijeras Creek scholars. We wish them good luck at the Global Finals tournament in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Online Math Team ranked 1st place in its national completion

GEORGE WHITE ELEMENTARY WINS NATIONAL TITLE

The Capistrano Unified School District is proud to announce the George White Elementary Online Math Team ranked 1st place in its national completion, with over 82 teams representing all 50 of the United States. The team is composed of 4th grade students Adam Levy, Derek Cheng, Alyssa White, Claire Richards, Shelby Wong, Jennifer Daly, Thomas Van Hoomissen, Scottie James, Patrick Mullen, Alec Kirste, Jeremy Ingraham, Jack Matthess, Kaelyn Casazza, Emily Pai, Troy Walker, Jazim Khan, Kian Ghafari, Patrick Ring, Alexandria Rosas, and Jasmine Mosavi.

“We are thrilled with the success of this team,” said Mike Spelber, principal at George White Elementary School in Laguna Niguel. “They have worked hard and their perseverance and dedication have paid off.”

The team, which started as an after school program offered by parent volunteer Diana Wong, quickly gained notoriety as being fun yet educational, doubling its size in nearly one month. “We hope to see the popularity of other academic organizations increase as a result of this success,” notes Spelber. “We can’t ask for anything better than infusing fun with learning and success!”
