When the City Council reconvenes on Jan. 5, Council Member Carmen Cave will serve residents as Mayor and Council Member Donald Garcia will serve as Mayor Pro Tem.
The council members were selected for the posts by their colleagues during the City Council’s annual reorganization Wednesday. The mayor and mayor pro tem serve a one-year term.
The reorganization followed the official swearing in of Cave and Mayor Phil Tsunoda, who has served in that role this past year. Cave was re-elected to office in November and city voters elected Tsunoda into office for the first time. Tsunoda has served the residents of Aliso Viejo since his council appointment in May 2007.
This will be the fourth mayoral stint for Cave, who served as the city’s first mayor upon incorporation on July 1, 2001. Cave went on to serve as mayor again in 2006 and 2007. Garcia, who would assume the duties of the mayor in her absence, served as mayor pro tem in 2008 and mayor in 2009.
During Wednesday’s meeting, Tsunoda – who established 2010 as the Year of the Youth – congratulated Cave and Garcia for their 2011 posts. He will be recognized as outgoing mayor on Jan. 5.
The council meets at 7 p.m. the first and third Wednesday of the month in Council Chambers at City Hall, 12 Journey. The Dec. 15 meeting was canceled due to the holidays.
Council agendas are posted on the city’s Web site at www.cityofalisoviejo.com.
