City seeking bids for street rehabilitation project

The city is now accepting bids for its annual Slurry Seal and Rehabilitation project designed to improve city streets. Bids are due by 2 p.m. Jan. 31 to the city clerk’s office, 12 Journey.

The roughly $625,000 project includes applying Type II emulsion aggregate slurry with latex additive (approximately 1,900 extra long tons); crack sealing; asphalt patching; removing and replacing traffic striping, markings, and raised pavement markers; street sweeping; and public notifications. The contractor will have 40 days to complete the work.

Bidders can obtain a copy of the Contract Documents for $25 from the City Engineer, Public Works Department at 12 Journey or have them mailed for $15.

Aliso Viejo’s Deputy of the Year named


Orange County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Gil Torrez has been named Aliso Viejo Deputy of the Year 2011. He will be honored by the City Council on Jan. 18.

Torrez, a 15-year sheriff’s veteran, has served Aliso Viejo since June 2004. His hard work and dedication has earned him the respect of his peers and members of the community.

On patrol and as a field training officer, Torrez has faithfully served this community in an array of capacities. He served as a Selected Enforcement Team (SET) member twice and serves as the Aliso Viejo Terrorism Liaison Officer. His proactive work has earned him the department’s Medal of Lifesaving for saving the life of a child who nearly drowned.

“Gil has been committed to public service for most of his life,” said Lt. Bob Osborne, chief of Aliso Viejo Police Services. “To Gil, the words Service, Duty and Honor are more than just words … they are a way of life.”

Torrez’ public service started in 1990 when he joined the United States Marine Corps. He served his country from 1990 to 1994.

In his free time, Torrez enjoys spending time with his wife of nearly 19 years and their three children.

Final Green City Initiative Workshop Jan. 19

The final workshop in a series of many designed to implement sustainable living practices into everyday city life will take place on Thursday, Jan. 19.

The “Aliso Viejo Green City Initiative” workshop is at 7 p.m. at Aliso Viejo City Hall, 12 Journey.

The goal of the Aliso Viejo Green City Initiative is to increase energy efficiency, reduce energy and water consumption and reduce waste stream flow.

The meeting will essentially recap the last 10 workshops conducted over the past 16 months that focused on public education and implementation strategies for incorporating sustainable living practices into part of our daily lives.  Topics discussed included energy and water; transportation and vehicle management; recycling and waste management; and land use.

Snow Fest set for Jan. 28

The city of Aliso Viejo will once again transform a pristine park into a winter wonderland with Snow Fest on Jan. 28.

Visitors will enjoy the Grand Mountain (long run), Bunny Slope (short run) and Snow Man Park for youngsters 5 and under. The special event takes place in three sessions from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Grand Park. Along with tons of snow, Snow Fest will feature refreshments and music.

Pre-event registration is required and begins for Aliso Viejo residents only on Saturday, Jan. 7, with open registration beginning Wednesday, Jan. 11, if space is available. Registration takes place at City Hall, 12 Journey. Rain dates are set for Feb. 11 and Feb. 25, if needed.
