The former Crystal Cathedral now becomes truly OURS under the name of ‘Christ Cathedral’!
The ordination of Catholic priests last weekend at St. Columban Catholic Church in Garden Grove carried additional significance for regional Catholics and other people of faith. As part of an elaborate ordination ritual attended by over 1500, the Most Reverend Tod D. Brown, Roman Catholic Bishop of Orange took the opportunity to acknowledge Vatican approval of the name chosen for the Diocese’s future cathedral and the appointment of Fr. Christopher H. Smith to serve as Episcopal Vicar to Christ Cathedral.
The Diocese of Orange acquired the former Crystal Cathedral campus in 2011. While occupancy and comprehensive use of the property by the Diocese will not be immediate, a gradual transition process has begun. The first significant effort to identify the iconic venue as a Catholic religious center and place of worship begins with the selection of the name, Christ Cathedral. In his remarks at the conclusion of the Ordination Mass, Bishop Brown noted, “We hold Rev. Schuller and his ministry in the highest esteem. It was important that any change of name for the cathedral itself be respectful of its spiritual legacy while accommodating our needs to clearly define this important facility as a Catholic center of worship.” The formal process for the naming of a Catholic Church, calls for the proposed name to be submitted to the Congregation of Bishops, the curia in Rome responsible for all matters pertaining to bishops and their churches. Bishop Brown submitted Christ Cathedral as the proposed name and received approval, April 26, 2012.When considering a name for the future Catholic Cathedral, Bishop Brown’s primary requisite was to ensure a clear Christological reference. “Today, I am honored to participate in the ordination of four new diocesan priests and congratulate them on the fulfillment of their vocation.
I am equally pleased to acknowledge a senior member of our clerical staff – Fr. Christopher H. Smith – and to announce his appointment as the first Episcopal Vicar to our new Cathedral, which will be called Christ Cathedral, a clear proclamation of why this Church exists and will be of continuing importance to people of faith across the region.” The first Catholic liturgy to be celebrated in Christ Cathedral has yet to be scheduled. Bishop Brown also noted, “Catholics throughout the diocese, and all across America, are eagerly anticipating that important day.” In his new capacity as Episcopal (or Cathedral) Vicar, Fr. Smith will oversee all administrative and policy matters for Christ Cathedral and the adjacent campus. He will supervise a variety of internal departments and be responsible for the liturgical and clerical oversight of the Cathedral campus.

A timely reminder for those requesting proof of Registration/Parish Involvement….
Please note that, from proven necessity, Corpus Christi has a policy that impacts only a small number of people. Most Catholic Schools require proof of Registration/participation within Catholic parishes. Long-time Registered/participating parishioners (and those previously registered/participating in other parishes) will not be impacted in any way. However, an unfortunate truth is that some people only Register so as to get their children into a particular school (sometimes even seeking a ‘Parish Discount!’) but are not present nor financially supportive of our parish programs and efforts. To help avoid these situations, in order to receive a Letter of Parish Verification/Participation from Corpus Christi, families need to have been Registered AND financially participating at Corpus Christi for a minimum of the recent FULL calendar year. The year-long financial record needs to be verifiable through regular use of offertory/stewardship envelopes, credit card records, specific donations to parish programs via check, Pastoral Services Appeal Pledges, etc. This should not prove a hindrance to anyone newly arrived here in Aliso Viejo, as all Catholic Schools will accept a Letter of Verification/Participation from your previous parish in your former community.
Do you (or your child) desire to become Roman Catholic in 2013?
Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults – and – Rite of Christian Initiation Adapted for Children/Teens
With this year’s Easter season now finished you may recall that the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults is the Church-approved manner by which adults who are either not baptized or have been baptized into another Christian denomination are sacramentaly received and welcomed into the Roman Catholic Church through the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation) or if already baptized in another Christian denomination, through a Profession of Faith. For children/teens ages 7-17, the same Rite is adapted to be age appropriate but remains the universal manner for being received and welcomed into the Roman Catholic Church. Reception into the Church through Baptism or Profession of Faith for children, teens or adults occurs on Holy Saturday during the Easter Vigil Liturgy, which will occur next year on March 30, 2013. The preparation process for adults, teens or children who would like to be received into the Church at Easter, 2013, will be getting underway in early summer. Those who would like to participate, and are presently Registered members of Corpus Christi parish (as of May1, 2012), are asked to contact Susie Hays at 389-9008, so that the necessary pre-enrollment paperwork can be assembled. Thanks.
La Cena is coming…La Cena is coming….In the midst of all the parish changes that will be occurring this Summer, it is important to remember that parish life continues…and one of the best ways to reassure yourselves that Corpus Christi is still Corpus Christi is to make plans to attend and enjoy this Summer’s two ‘La Cena’ evenings of food and music. Scheduled for Saturday, July 21st and again on Saturday, August 18th, each evening will commence following the 5:00 p.m. Mass outdoors on our lawn. Pre-paid advance reservations will be required but in a nod to continuing economic uncertainty, the tiered pricing for each evening will be only $25 per adult (15 and up), $15 for children (10-14) and only $10 for wee-ones (2-9), infants under 2 are free. This being a fund-raiser we are of course looking for whatever donations of food, beverage or supplies we can obtain that will cut down on our initial costs. If you know of any generous suppliers of quality sausage, pasta, bread, salad fixings or good vino…please make contact with either Lisa Aguirre (lisa-a@cox.net) or Georgina Yacap (gyacap@cox.net.) With pastoral transitions having just occurred, these ‘La Cena’s’ will be a wonderful opportunity to not only meet and experience Corpus Christi’s

Your participation is what makes Corpus Christi thrive….
Over our history, Corpus Christi has risen to every transition NOT because of one or two people but rather, the belief of the COMMUNITY that we are creating something unique and special amongst Roman Catholic parishes. Through the investment of time and energy by MANY people our ministries have grown, our outreach has drawn more to participate with our Masses and our growth from an initial 337 people to 2200 FAMILIES has been spectacular.
We have tried to foster a parish culture of INTENTIONALITY, where everyone is called and STRONGLY encouraged to be actively involved in the success of our parish…not onlookers who just drop by for sacraments, but people invested in the development of The Body of Christ here in Aliso Viejo. We recently hosted our annual Ministry Fair as an opportunity not just for everyone to savor the diversity of opportunities for service/involvement but also as a chance for our ministries and outreaches to solicit new members and refresh their rosters.
In particular, Hospitality Ministry (the folks who help distribute our Worship Aids and maintain order/dignity within our Masses), Scrip (the teams of volunteers who staff the SCRIP selling table before and after each Mass) and our
MOPS Ministry (Mothers of Pre-Schoolers) are in need of fresh assistance so that our teams of volunteers do not get overwhelmed. Our Maintenance Ministry could also use some fresh infusions of hands/legs/whole bodies to push brooms and swing mops and wield dust cloths in the twice-a-week cleanings of our Grand Hall and bathrooms. All volunteers need to be fingerprinted (at our expense) and Safe Environment Trained…but once that is done…you will have the pride of ownership, the feeling of contributing to the bigger picture and become one of the people who make our community come to life! Please contact the Ministry Leaders on the front of this Bulletin to offer your services and get the process rolling. Corpus Christi can’t grow and thrive without you….PLEASE! (and THANK YOU!!!)
