Corpus Christi – Fr. Fred Has News For You

Date:

Our SUMMER REVIVAL is NEXT week!!!!!
What is a Gospel Revival? It is usually a spirited opportunity for a renowned ‘preacher’ to inspire a community with ‘fiery’ preaching and lively music…frequently accompanied by ample quantities of hospitality and socializing.
Aren’t ‘Revivals’ usually associated with the South and a Pentecostal/Evangelical approach to faith? Frequently, yes, but ‘REVIVALS’ in the Roman Catholic tradition go by the name of ‘RETREAT’, an opportunity to draw apart and experience aspects of our faith in a different manner than how we traditionally celebrate. Retreats are common and frequent in the Catholic tradition.

What will OUR Revival be like? Well, it follows on the foundation of our other strong ‘Summer Experiences’, where our parish family has come together to share energizing events. Our 2009 Gospel Revival will be TWO nights of food, community Gospel Music and dynamic ‘preaching’ by Fr. Charles Wood of the Diocese of Portland, Oregon.

The Gospel Choirs represent a vibrant ‘Gospel-style’ of music from multiple parishes in Los Angeles; one is a Young Adult Choir and the other a mixed choir drawn from a variety of parishes. Both Choirs have shared their music at the Religious Education Congress, at the opening Liturgies for Black Awareness Month at Our Lady Queen of Angeles Cathedral and have also sung at the Los Angeles House of Blues Gospel Brunch.

Our Revivals will commence with dinner at 6:00 p.m. and then be followed by the evening music/preaching presentation, a weaving together of both music and word…ending with a summer bon-fire and dessert.

Food? You said food? Yes, each evening begins with a shared ‘southern style’ barbeque dinner, offered in a buffet manner. Each evening concludes with a self-serve ice-cream sundae bar with all the necessary fixin’s. While lemonade and water will be available, individuals are free to bring their own alcoholic beverages. (This is a ‘Catholic’ Revival after all!)

Will the Revival be indoors in the Grand Hall? Nope…unless it rains in the middle of July, our plan is to host it under the warm Summer sky on our lawn. Tables and chairs will be available for eating but people can also bring their own picnic chairs or blankets.

Does it cost a lot? What are the fees? The Registration Fee covers the bus transportation for the Choirs, the plane, car and lodging for Fr. Wood as well as the stipends for the Gospel Choirs and Father Wood. In addition…it also includes meals and dessert for both evenings. The fee is $30 per adult and $15 per child (under 12 and over 2), one price for two very full and fun evenings. (Sorry, no discounts or partial payments for partial attendance.) That comes out to $15 per night per adult, inclusive of evening presentation AND dinner!

When is it? Our 2009 Gospel Revival will be celebrated on the evenings of July 29th and 30th, both evenings beginning at 6:00 p.m. and concluding roughly around 9:30 p.m.
How do I sign up? Reservation Forms are on the Concierge Shelves (as well as in this Bulletin)….of late, many of our events have been approaching maximum capacity, so please don’t wait until the last minute, when space may no longer be available.
If I want to help with the set-up, take-down or food service, whom do I contact? Leave your name and phone/e-mail with Fr. Fred at 389-9011.

Oops, our bad….actually the lunch benches were prepped and repainted not just by Stephen Ure and his dad but by a whole flock of our Corpus Christi Eagle Scouts….sorry about leaving out the rest of you guys! Thanks for your hard work.

Thank you to EVERYONE who stopped, bought and enjoyed last weekend’s burrito sale hosted by our HAVEN Youth leadership under the auspices of BOOTSTRAPs Ministry. With total sales of $1800 our youth realized a profit of $1300! Thank you for your support and belief in our youth. Special thanks to Terrence and TJ Yacap for their leadership…and for the team of adult and youth volunteers who assisted.
Your generosity for the Columban Missions was exceptional last weekend with $6500 being offered to them for their outreach efforts. Thank you

Directional aid now on our website….(www.avcatholics.org)
If you think government agencies move slow…you should try getting Mapquest or the other assorted on-line directional entities to correctly show Corpus Christi’s location for people seeking direction.

After years and years of trying to get them to update….our simpler answer is to add a NEW ‘DIRECTIONS’ tab on our own website that provides not just downloadable maps, but written guidance as well. Feel free to direct friends or visitors to our website (www.avcatholics.org) when guiding them to Mass or an event. (Our thanks and appreciation to Anne Jordan for doing all the hard work and making it happen!)

Need to find some closure after a divorce or death?

The loss of a loved one through separation, divorce or death is one of life’s most traumatic experiences. It can result in nearly unbearable feelings of loneliness and grief. Many people who have suffered this loss feel left our by their church, uneasy around their married friends, unsure of themselves and uncertain about their futures. ‘BEGINNING EXPERIENCE’ is a weekend retreat program presented by a team of people who have suffered the same loss and are willing to share the wisdom they have gained. It is designed to be a time of closure on the past and renewed hope for the future.

Those who come should be beyond the initial feelings of anger and despair, they should be at the point of wanting a new beginning and ready to work to make that desire a reality. There is a BEGINNING EXPERIENCE weekend scheduled for July 17-19 and November 13-15 at Prince of Peace Abbey in Oceanside. For more information please contact Michelle Stout at 949-589-5609 or Mike McBride at 858-560-1671. (Cost for the entire weekend is $225.)

1. A reminder, our parish policy is that any family seeking the Sacrament of Baptism, First Reconciliation or First Eucharist, needs to have been a REGISTERED PARISHIONER for a minimum of THREE MONTHS prior to the setting of any Sacramental dates. (Thus, someone registering today, may call in three months to begin the process of scheduling a date….not register and schedule at the same time.)

2. Our next Sacramental Preparation Session for families of children desiring First Reconciliation and First Eucharist here at Corpus Christi is scheduled for Saturday, August 15th at 2:30 p.m., concluding with the 5:00 p.m. Mass. Please note that participation at one of our quarterly Sacramental Prep Sessions prior to scheduling a First Reconciliation and First Eucharist is a parish requirement. You will receive your Sacramental Registration Form at the conclusion of the session. This policy is binding for ALL families, both those who have multiple children (who may have already received one or more First Eucharists, fresh attendance at the Sacramental Prep for each child is necessary) and for those approaching the Sacraments for the first time. To ensure adequate supplies, please call Peggy Armenta at (949) 389-9209.

It is important to note that these Sacramental Preparation Sessions augment but DO NOT replace our parish policy of parents teaching their own children the essentials of our faith and introducing their own children to the person of Jesus Christ. These Prep Sessions are final steps to ensure that parental education has indeed been happening.

Some people need gentle reminders that not all Christian churches are the same…

A reminder (and a request) that when you are joined at Mass by your NON-Roman Catholic friends, when it comes time for Communion, please remind them that we are a ‘closed-Communion’ Church and that they are invited to come forward and request a blessing but NOT Communion. They can indicate this request by coming forward with their arms/hands crossed over their heart…and if the EM looks confused to simply say, ‘May I have a blessing…’ Eucharist/ Communion, is the final statement of being in ‘ FULL Communion’ not just with God, but with the Roman Catholic Church, which implies an embrace of our teachings, the hierarchy of Pope and Bishops, etc. It is NOT just about believing that the bread and wine have become the body and blood of Jesus; rather, Communion is the fullest statement of being in FULL Communion with the RC Church. Regularly we encounter people in the Communion line who, through their actions, are pretty obviously not Roman Catholic and when asked if they are RC will reply, ‘No, I am a Christian…’ which is rather odd considering that so are we…but not all Christians are the same. Anymore than we have keys to each other’s homes in our neighborhood, we don’t automatically have rights to each other’s religious/faith rituals just because we want to feel included. So…your help in prepping your visitors would be appreciated. Thanks.

Following the gifting of our Corpus Christi Scholarships to our five deserving youth, a few people inquired if they could make specific cash donations that could be added to the Scholarship Fund? YES….you can most certainly send or drop off any amounts, simply make sure they are CLEARLY marked, Corpus Christi College Scholarship….and thank you for helping to fund our future.

Planning a barbeque…a summer outing…a family reunion? Make sure you stock up on SCRIP to help obtain all your necessary supplies. Also, it is easy to enroll your grocery AFFINITY cards…thus insuring that Corpus Christi always benefits whenever you shop…and you don’t have to do anything! Info is available on the Concierge Shelves. Thanks.
