Cox Communications Celebrates Gigabit Speeds in OC and Supports GameChanger Charity

Date:

To celebrate its rapid deployment of next-generation gigabit internet speeds to 100% of homes it serves in Orange County, Cox Communications held a charity video gaming event on June 26  that recognized 14 Orange County “Cox Gig Cities” and raised money for GameChanger Charity, a local nonprofit that utilizes technology and innovation to help ease the pain of children battling life-threatening diseases.

The “Gigabration:  Gaming for Good” event, hosted at The Royce Park Place apartment complex in Irvine, showcased the power of Cox’s GIGABLAST internet service. The celebration included a video gaming competition where four teams made up of community leaders, TV celebrities and expert gamers played in a friendly competition of Mario Kart in support of GameChanger Charity. The teams included reality star Tanner Tolbert and Joe Muller, Mayor of Dana Point; Cameron Greely and John Mark Jennings, Mayor of Laguna Niguel; Courtney Williams, aka GlitchXCity, and Greg Raths, Mayor of Mission Viejo; and Jack Townsend and Anthony Kuo, Mayor Pro Tem for the city of Irvine.  Cox donated $6,000 and four gaming systems to GameChanger on behalf of the teams.

Cox now offers GIGABLAST to all its residential customers in Orange County, from San Clemente and Laguna Hills to Mission Viejo and Irvine. Cox’s investment in infrastructure and ultra-fast internet speeds, is paving the way for smart homes, smart businesses and smart cities that are more connected than ever before.

Utilizing DOCSIS 3.1 technology, gigabit speeds empower today’s internet users to run multiple devices in the household simultaneously for an advanced experience.

GIGABLAST from Cox delivers more speed, a powerful home network, and rich broadband-enabled services to customers through a Panoramic WiFi gateway modem offering wall-to-wall WiFi coverage throughout the home. Gigabit internet speeds allow users to:

  • Run ALL internet-enabled devices at the same time
  • Stream more than 25 4K HD videos simultaneously
  • Download an HD movie in less than 60 seconds
  • Download 100 songs in three seconds
  • Upload about 1,000 photos in about a minute

Cox was the first provider in Southern California to offer residential gigabit speeds when it launched GIGABLAST in a luxury apartment development in Irvine in 2014. Since then, the company has invested heavily in infrastructure upgrades to roll out gigabit speeds to all households it serves in Orange County. That investment was part of the company’s commitment to invest $10 billion in its network over the next five years.

“By heavily investing in our infrastructure, we are enabling smart homes, smart businesses and smart cities that are more connected than ever before,” said Sam Attisha, Senior Vice President and Region Manager for Cox Communications in California. “Our investment in the Cox network, along with the deployment of DOCSIS 3.1 technology, means we are staying significantly ahead of demand.”

DOCSIS 3.1 technology builds on the strength of Cox’s fiber-based network and provides the ability to roll out gigabit internet speeds throughout more neighborhoods at a faster pace. Cox has committed to offering gigabit speeds to all customers – not just a select few – and an array of speed and pricing options to all homes and businesses, not just chosen neighborhoods.

With the average home expected to have more than 50 Internet-connected devices by 2020, Cox is staying ahead of meeting customers’ growing demands by rapidly expanding residential gigabit speeds. Cox has been delivering a wide range of broadband speeds to customers for years, including speeds for business customers that have well surpassed one gigabit for more than 12 years.
