Crown Valley Donates to Typhoon Haiyan Victims
Local Businesses Support Efforts of Students, Families
Crown Valley Cares donated supplies to people affected by Typhoon Haiyan.

 

Crown Valley Elementary School collected 80 bags of clothing, toiletries, and dried goods for families in the Philippines who were affected by Typhoon Haiyan. Donations included new and used clothes. The local business community supported the effort as well. Home Depot of Laguna Niguel donated 30 shipping boxes and U-Haul provided with a credit for transportation of the boxes. This is not the school’s first philanthropic effort. Each year, Crown Valley Cares program partners with South County Outreach, Toys 4 Tots, and Soles 4 Souls at various times of the year to give back to the community.

State Task Force Selects District Administrator
Group to Examine Special Education Policy, Legislation

 

Assistant Superintendent for Special Education Sara Jocham has been selected as a member of a statewide task force on special education. The task force will meet over the next year and a half and examine all facets of educating students with disabilities and make recommendations for policy and legislative change to the State Board, the credentialing commission, and the State Department of Education. In particular, the group will look at ways to improve the supply and preparation of special education teachers, variations among districts in identifying and adequately serving students with disabilities, and the state’s complex system of funding programs and services for special needs children.

Board Organizational Meeting Set for Wednesday
Trustees to Elect Slate of Officers

The Capistrano Unified School District will hold its annual organizational meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013. The Board of Trustees will select members to serve in the positions of president, vice president, and clerk. Members hold their positions for a term of one year. In addition, the Board will hear the first interim budget report, review short and long-term facility improvement and funding possibilities, and discuss the possibility of retiring bonds and ceasing the collection of taxes in Community Facilities District 87-1. The Board will also reconsider action taken in August regarding CFD 90-2 Improvement Area No. 2002-1 and consider hiring the Architect of Record for the K-8 school recently approved to be built in Rancho Mission Viejo. The open session of the meeting begins at 7 p.m. An agenda can be found online.

 

Ed Department, PTA Publish Common Core Parent Guide
Publication Describes Standards

State education officials are working with the California State PTA to get information on the Common Core State Standards into the hands of parents across California, Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson announced recently. As part of this effort, the organizations are distributing the Parents’ Guide to Student Success, a series of resources designed to help parents understand what their children will be learning at each grade level in English-language arts and mathematics. The guides are available in English and Spanish on the CDECommon Core State Standards Web site, as well as onCalifornia State PTA site. Originally developed by the National PTA, each guide includes: An overview of some of the key items students will learn in the Common Core State Standards for English-language arts and mathematics, ideas for activities that enable parents to support learning at home, and topics of discussion for talking with teachers about student academic progress.-more-

 

Adult Transitions Program to Host Annual Holiday Boutique
ZOOMARS Petting Zoo Site of Annual Event

The Capistrano Unified School District Adult Transition Programs present “The 2013 Holiday Boutique & Fundraiser,” hosted by ZOOMARS Petting Zoo. The 2013 Holiday Boutique & Fundraiser is scheduled for Friday, Dec. 13, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at ZOOMARS Petting Zoo, in the Historic Los Rios District in beautiful downtown San Juan Capistrano. ZOOMARS Petting Zoo owner Carolyn Franks of has graciously offered to host the Adult Transition Program’s annual holiday boutique. Under the direction of Principal Clint Collins, the Adult Transition Program offers work training opportunities and independent living skills training for students. The proceeds for this event will benefit the CUSD Adult Transition Program and its annual graduation.
