Capo trustees: Illegal student protests must stop
Capistrano Unified trustees said Friday they understand and respect the sudden groundswell of student activism at two district high schools in response to recent teacher pay cuts, but stressed that the walkouts cannot continue and disruptions to learning will not be tolerated. Reacting to two lively protests in as many days at Aliso Viejo’s Aliso Niguel High School and Dana Point’s Dana Hills High School, school board President Anna Bryson said she supported the students’ free speech rights, but that they needed to follow the law.

Parents should relax while children work through school challenges
Q. My son, who is now 15, was a good math student, but was never able to pass those darn speed tests throughout elementary school. He tried everything. I am happy to report though that he still had a good aptitude for math and ended up getting into algebra in seventh grade. Today, he has an “A” in Algebra 2 as a freshman. Please encourage your reader not to stress. Encourage a love of math and the rest will follow!

Capo to hire security guards if teachers strike
The Capistrano Unified School District is planning to hire private security guards for all of its campuses if teachers in the district go on strike in the coming weeks. The school district – Orange County’s second largest, with 56 campuses – last month placed open purchase orders totaling $100,000 with two private security firms for an estimated 250 guards. Capistrano officials have stressed that the district has not spent any money yet, that the guards would be unarmed, and that the guards would be deployed on an as-needed basis.

Capo students, parents to stage 1-day sickout
Parents and students across the Capistrano Unified School District are expected to stage a one-day “student strike” Tuesday in which kids will be kept at home to protest the 10.1 percent pay cuts imposed on teachers by the school board. The sickout is being organized by parents through e-mail and word of mouth to draw attention to the way the district – Orange County’s second largest – has handled contract negotiations with its 2,300 teachers. Hundreds of parents, teachers and students are expected to descend on district headquarters in San Juan Capistrano on Tuesday night for a school board meeting. Capistrano Unified’s teachers union could vote to authorize a strike as early as Thursday.

No longer highest paid teachers
Teachers in California no longer earn, on average, the most of any state in the nation. New York has taken over that distinction. California has the second highest student to teacher ratio in the nation (20.9:1), next to Utah’s 21.4. And its spending per student has fallen two notches to 43rd in the nation.

3,880 Capo students take part in sickout
An estimated 3,880 students across the Capistrano Unified School District, mostly at the elementary level, stayed home Tuesday as families staged a one-day “student strike” to protest a 10.1 percent pay cut imposed on teachers by the school board. Attendance at the district’s 35 elementary campuses was down 16 percent, hovering at an 80 percent attendance rate versus the average 96 percent. Attendance at the district’s nine middle schools and six high schools, meanwhile, was only down about 1 percent below the annual average.

900 protest Capo teacher pay cuts
About 900 Capistrano Unified educators, parents and students descended on district headquarters Tuesday night to protest a 10.1 percent pay cut imposed on teachers by the school board, continuing the rallying cry of an estimated 3,880 students who staged a mass sickout earlier in the day. Carrying signs that said “What’s the board’s real agenda?” and “Respect our teachers,” the teachers demanded that the school district return to the bargaining table to hash out a compromise with union leaders. Capistrano’s teachers union could vote to authorize a strike as early as Thursday.
