More school districts on financially distressed list
Cutbacks in state school finance have generated a sharp uptick in the number of California school districts in financial distress, state schools Supt. Jack O’Connell said Monday. “Massive state budget cuts are crippling our public school system’s ability to operate,” O’Connell said as he released a list of 126 school districts that the state is watching closely, up 17 percent from a year earlier. “Public education in California received $17 billion less in state funding than anticipated over the last two budget years.”

Judge dismisses ex-Capo chief’s $5.5 million lawsuit
An Orange County judge has dismissed a $5.5 million breach-of-contract lawsuit filed by fired schools chief A. Woodrow Carter against the Capistrano Unified School District, his second such ruling since Carter’s termination more than a year ago. Superior Court Judge Steven Perk in Santa Ana said Friday that Carter had “no facts” to support the argument that he was wrongfully terminated under state labor laws, and no right to have been notified of performance-related issues before he was fired.

Nearly half of California’s largest districts eye shorter school year
In response to California’s deepening budget crisis, administrators in nearly half of the state’s 30 largest school districts are considering shortening the school year from its current level of 180 instructional days, according to a survey by California Watch.

Teachers in San Jose have already agreed to cut one week from the school year. In Los Angeles, Superintendent Ramon Cortines is pushing to cut the school year by 5 days. The Long Beach Unified School District wants to reduce it by three days, and the San Francisco Unified by two.
