District Welcomes Students Back to School

Classes Begin in the State’s Highest Achieving Large School District

Teachers and administrators in the state’s ninth largest school district will welcome nearly 51,000 students back to school on Monday, Sept. 9, marking the 163rd year of public education in South Orange County. As students return to classes, the District is continuing its focus on quality instruction for all students. “The Board and I welcome our students and employees back after what I hope was a restful, safe, and productive summer,” Superintendent Joe Farley said. “This year promises to be even more successful than last year as staff works to ensure that we have a successful transition to the Common Core and continue our emphasis on quality instruction.”-more-

The first session will begin the week of September 23rd and will include more than 200 classes at 35 local elementary schools. The program offers art, science, cooking, sports, and academic enrichment classes, which are taught by CUSD teachers and professional experts. All classes will be held on CUSD elementary school sites and will follow school dismissal times. City of Mission Viejo Offers 10-Week Parenting Program

Sessions Designed to Provide Intervention Strategies

Parents are invited to take part in the Parent Project program that is designed to help children grow into safe and capable adults. The program takes place October 1 through December 10. The City of Mission Viejo for the last several years has offered the 10-week program that was created for parents with difficult or out-of-control adolescent children. Developed over a 20-year-period, the curriculum helps parents learn and practice specific prevention and intervention strategies for defiant actions or destructive behaviors such as truancy, alcohol and drug use, gangs, running away, violence and other issues. Parents will learn proven tools and tactics to deal with poor grades, teen social trends, and they’ll learn to understand teens use of technology. Mission Viejo deputy sheriff’s, including several of the School Resource Officers, receive 40 hours of training to facilitate the program, which caters to parents with kids in different stages of life. Deputies teaching the program can address every issue parents may have with their children to help them build better relationships. The first six classes of the 10-week program take place on Tuesdays from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., with the rest ending an hour earlier at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center, 24932 Veterans Way. Cost is $20 per person or $30 per couple. Space is limited, so register today by calling 949-470-8433. For more information about this beneficial program, visit www.parentproject.com.
