DON JUAN AVILA MIDDLE SCHOOL

Dear Parents,
It’s almost here! Our first day of school begins Wednesday, September 8, at 8:45 a.m. If your child has Zero Period Physical Education, he/she should arrive at least 10 minutes before the 7:38 a.m. start time. If your child will be picking up his/her schedule on the first day of school, please arrive early to allow your child time to find classrooms and locker location, etc. Be sure to have your child bring all the appropriate materials needed for the first day.
Here are some helpful hints for a successful first day:
• Arrive early, no later than 8:20 a.m. the first week of school. Supervisors will be on campus starting at 8:00 a.m.
• Bring a healthy snack as lunch is late in the afternoon.
• Avoid the first day lunch crunch and bring your lunch.
• Bring your schedule, pens, pencils, a notebook and paper.
Drop off for the first week of school can be very busy. Parents who choose to drop off inside the parking lot will need to enter on the south end of campus and travel the entire length of the lot, dropping off on the middle school side. The middle lane is for through traffic. Always pull to the right curb for drop off. When inside the parking lot, never park or have car unattended at the curb.
Parents will follow the parking lot around and exit by making a right hand turn out of the lot. Any student dropped off north of the exit must use the north stairs to enter campus. Students should congregate in the quad area or black top before school. No students are to loiter in other areas prior to school.
PLEASE REVIEW TRAFFIC PLAN ON EDLINE.
We know that the first week is very hectic. Students riding bikes must wear helmets. Please caution your child to be careful and ride safely. Bikes are to be walked on to campus. Due to safety concerns, razors and skateboards are not allowed. Students are to use crosswalks at all times.
7th and 8th grade students will begin receiving their textbooks on Thursday, September 9. 6th graders will begin receiving their textbooks after locker assignments have been made. Distribution of all textbooks to students generally takes one week. Please remember all books must be covered immediately. It will be your child’s responsibility to keep all books in good condition so they may be used year after year. Please keep textbooks dry and keep a plastic bag in your child’s locker to protect them.
On the first day of school, we will be hosting our Effective Behavior Support implementation day. Students will be reporting to Homeroom as usual, and we will be teaching students how to be responsible, respectful, and ready in all aspects of school. We are confident that this new program will be another effective way to ensure a successful school year.
Don’t forget that Thursday, September 9, is a late start day. Students should plan to arrive no earlier than 9:00 a.m. the first late start Thursday. There will be no zero period on late start days. We do not have supervision for students on late start days, so it is essential to drop off students on time.
There will be a make-up picture day on Tuesday, September 21, for students who missed photos at registration.
Please refer to our DJAMS’ Edline address at: www.edline.net to keep up-to-date on your child’s classroom information, school calendar, grades, homework, etc. If you have not yet signed up for Edline, you may obtain your activation code from the main office.
We look forward to a wonderful beginning to a great year!
Sincerely,
Chris Carter
