ANNUAL MARCH TABNESS COMPETITION
PAL has begun the 3rd Annual March Tabness Competition! Students and staff members can collect tabs from aluminum cans for their homerooms during the whole month of March. These tabs will be recycled and funds will be raised for the Ronald McDonald House. Final tallies will be done on Wednesday, March 31, so collect those tabs!

CELL PHONE USE NOT PERMITTED DURING SCHOOL HOURS
This is a reminder that cell phone use by students is prohibited during school hours. When students become ill during the school day, we ask that they report to the health office for assistance. We have had a few instances recently where students are texting their parents to pick them up without first coming to the health office. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and for reminding your kids!

CHICKENPOX INFORMATION
A few students on our campus have recently been reported with chickenpox. Chickenpox is not usually a serious illness; however, any person who develops chickenpox should stay at home until the rash has completely crusted over (usually about 5 days from the time the rash started).
The chickenpox vaccine is recommended for children and adults who have not had chickenpox and have not received chickenpox vaccine previously. Contact your healthcare provider to discuss whether or not you/your child should be vaccinated or call the Orange County Public Health Referral Line at 1-800-564-8448 to find out where you/your child can get vaccinated. During outbreak situations, a 2nd dose of chickenpox vaccine may be recommended by Public Health.
Chickenpox causes a blister-like rash on the skin, usually on the face, scalp, or trunk. The illness typically lasts about 5-10 days. High fever, severe itching, dehydration or headache may also occur. Sometimes there are complications such as infection of the blisters with bacteria, flare-ups of asthma, or pneumonia.
People may have more serious complications from chickenpox if they have weak immune systems either from illness or from medications such as long-term steroids. Also, pregnant women who have not had chickenpox before should avoid persons with chickenpox. If exposed, people with weak immune systems or who are pregnant should contact their doctor as soon as possible.
Chickenpox is spread easily from person-to-person by contact with secretions from the mouth or nose (for example, through coughing) or the fluid from the rash.
People who have previously had chickenpox and children who have been vaccinated occasionally still get chickenpox. They usually have a milder illness without fever and with fewer than 50 skin lesions, which may not form blisters and might not be itchy. The rash may look like bug bites and the illness usually does not last as long as in those who have never had chickenpox or the vaccine.
If you do develop a rash that may be chickenpox, please consult with your doctor and notify us at 362-0348.
