Join us next Saturday for The Magic Flute — Opera for Kids, when fantastical life-size puppets, professional singers and special guests from Chapman University join Pacific Symphony to bring Mozart’s fairy-tale opera to life. This Family Musical Mornings event is designed for kids ages 5-11.
Sat., Jan. 12 at 10 & 11:30 a.m. | Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall
Don’t miss the interactive Musical Carnival in the concert hall lobby, where kids can test drive a musical instrument, meet the performers and enjoy musical arts and crafts. Activities begin at 9 a.m. for 10 a.m. concertgoers and 12:15 p.m. for 11:30 a.m. concertgoers.
As the story unfolds, the Queen of the Night persuades Prince Tamino to rescue her daughter Pamina from captivity under the high priest Sarastro. Instead, he learns the high ideals of Sarastro’s community and seeks to join it. Tamino and Pamina undergo trials of initiation, which end in triumph, with the Queen and her cohorts vanquished. The birdcatcher Papageno, who accompanies Tamino on his quest, fails the trials completely but is rewarded anyway with the hand of his ideal female companion, Papagena.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to present ‘Magic Flute for Kids!’ to our Family Concert audiences,” says Susan Miller Kotses. “Mozart’s music has a purity and a playfulness to it that is particularly appealing to children, and the fantastical story featuring colorful characters provides a lively and engaging introduction to opera for children of all ages!”
