Eagle Scout, Brandon Neilson, received the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) Honor
Medal for Heroism at the annual BSA recognition dinner on Wednesday, March
13, 2013 at the Garden Grove Crown Plaza Hotel.  Many local Boy Scout
leaders from his troop, sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints (LDS), attended the ceremony.  Pat Brokaw, an LDS boy
scout leader said, “The Boy Scout program has been a great way to train our
youth to have the character and skills they need so they are ready to serve
and help those around them.”
Brandon’s family lives in Rancho Santa Margarita and one day in December
2011 his mother asked him to pick up his sister at volleyball practice at
Santa Margarita Catholic High School.  When he was walking to pick up his
sister, he heard someone yelling in the distance.  He followed the sound of
the distressed voice and found the high school custodian at the bottom of
the pool.  As a trained eagle scout, he just jumped in to the pool to bring
the man to the surface and then out of the water to successfully save his
life.  Jose Luis Mendoza, a father of four, did not know how to swim and was
grateful Brandon heard his cry for help.
