Dallas Hartmann instructing the moving of the stencil used to spray paint each number for seating.
With temperatures reaching 100 degrees, most teens would be at the pool or inside an air-conditioned mall, but not Dallas Hartmann. He was outside at Mission Viejo High School (MVHS) stadium on Friday and Saturday, August 26th and 27th, with paint and stencils, repairing bleachers. Alongside his friends and family, Dallas’ Boy Scout troop 752, sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, came to help him on his project, even in the extreme heat. There were a total of 25 volunteers giving over 100 man-hours to complete his Boy Scout Eagle project.
Dallas Hartmann attends MVHS and participates in Model United Nations (MUN) and plays on the basketball team for his school. His brother Wes, a senior, plays middle linebacker for the MVHS football team. Watching his brother play football at a home game, Dallas noticed the stadium seating was chipped and looked pretty shabby. He saw a need and thought a little paint and TLC would improve the looks of the stadium and be a great eagle scout project. His mom, Renee Hartmann, just happens to be the Secretary for the Mission Viejo High School Football Boosters, so it was an easy project to get approved. Taking one look at the before and after pictures, one can see why the booster club was happy to let him take on this big project.
In the stadium there are 18 rows and 40 seats across the center section reserved for season ticket holders. The first day volunteers scraped off lose yellow paint and then painted the bleachers red with paint rollers. On the second day the volunteers stenciled 720 numbers with yellow spray paint across each row. After two long hot days, Dallas said, “I have helped at many Eagle Projects with my church, but after being in charge, I now appreciate how much work it is. It feels good to be done and know that we did a good job.”
“We’re very proud of Dallas and the leadership and work he has demonstrated during his Eagle Scout Leadership Service project today. Dallas is a key member of our team and has always been a natural leader among the older and younger scouts. We anticipate great things from him in the future. “
