A good idea from a Los Angeles Times columnist!

Last week a friend forwarded a copy of the Los Angeles Times column, The California Cook, titled “The facts about food and farming.” The columnist, Russ Parsons, is also the Food Editor for the paper. I was ready to read yet another attack on corporate farms. Instead, I read a reasoned column about the actual situation. My favorite line was “farming without profit is gardening.” Take a few moments and read the column.
The message those of us in corporate farming of both animals and crops need to get is that we’re all in this together and we must act accordingly. I cannot improve on his last paragraph, so I’m offering it as an incentive for us all to stop and think.
“Finally, and most important: Beware the law of unintended consequences. Developing tasteless fruits and vegetables was not the goal of the last Green Revolution; it was a side effect of a system designed to eliminate hunger by providing plentiful, inexpensive food, but that also ended up rewarding quantity over quality. We should always keep in mind that when we’re dreaming of a system that focuses on the reverse, we run the risk of creating something far worse than strawberries that bounce.”
I think I’ll bookmark his column to read, he just may be the voice we need.
