A Salute to the Arts

Date: Sunday, August 6
Time: 2 – 4pm
Cost: $30 Ticket includes Festival of Arts admission, hardcover book, author reading and discussion, Q+A and book signing

The Festival introduces a new event, sponsored by PBS SoCal, inspired by the original Festival of Arts, which included a variety of artistic endeavors including theater, literature, dance and more. On August 6, “A Salute to the Arts” features an author talk with Maile Meloy who will be discussing her new book Do Not Become Alarmed.

When Liv and Nora decide to take their husbands and children on a holiday cruise, everyone is thrilled. The adults are lulled by the ship’s comfort and ease.  The four children—ages six to eleven—love the nonstop buffet and their newfound independence. But when they all go ashore for an adventure in Central America, a series of minor misfortunes and miscalculations leads the families farther and farther from the safety of the ship.  One minute the children are there, and the next they’re gone.  The parents, accustomed to security and control, turn on each other and blame themselves, while the seemingly helpless children discover resources they never knew they possessed.

Do Not Become Alarmed is a story about the protective force of innocence and the limits of parental power, and the way a crisis shifts our perceptions of what matters most.

Art & Story Time
“Jill and Dragon” by Lesley Barnes
Date: Monday, August 7
Time: 11am – 12noon
Cost: Free with Festival admission

Art and Story Time is a weekly series for children 5 and under. Every Monday from 11am – 12noon, enjoy a different book read aloud plus a hands-on art project. There may even be special surprise visits from illustrators, story characters, and more. Fun for children and their parents!
“And they all lived happily ever after.” At least, that’s what Jill’s story book tries telling her, but Jill can’t help noticing that at the end of the story, one character looks far from happy. Dragon is despised by the King because all he can do is singe, burn and barbeque. So in an attempt to see her fairy tale ring true, Jill invites Dragon out of the book so she can teach him some alternative life skills. A stunning debut from an award-winning illustrator, Jill and Dragon introduces a feisty, independent-minded new character in Jill, and reminds us that everyone has a talent, however well hidden.

Art Talks and Tea
“Hot off the Presses”

Date: Wednesday, August 9
Time: 12 – 1pm

Long-time exhibitor Vinita Voogd leads a group of printmakers in discussing printmaking methods and share the tools of their trade. Artists Jonathan Hunt, Noriho Uriu, Mariko Ishii and Yoonsook Ryang will each discuss a different printmaking technique ranging from etchings to linocuts. This is one of several topics discussed at the Festival’s weekly Art Talks, sponsored by Gelsons. For the Festival’s 85th anniversary, as a nod to the first art show, the Festival is adding tea for patrons to enjoy while artists lead conversations about their medium, inspiration, and careers in this fascinating and stimulating series.

Art, Jazz, Wine & Chocolate
Live Performance by Bill Cantos and Mari Falcone
Date: Thursday, August 10

The Festival’s casual and classy outdoor setting, together with the soulful sounds of jazz surrounded by fine art, creates an ideal evening for friends, sweethearts, and family.

Bill Cantos has released six solo CDs; the most recent is Love Wins: New Standards For The New Millennium, a collection of new songs written in the style of classic jazz standards. Among his current projects, Bill can be heard singing the main title song “All Right Day” in the new film Home Run Showdown (co-written by Bill and his wife, Mari Falcone). He records and tours with Herb Alpert and Lani Hall and is also a featured live performer with Burt Bacharach.

Pianist/composer/lyricist Mari Falcone is currently working on the new musical CHASING MEM’RIES, which will have its world premiere at the Geffen Playhouse in Westwood this fall, starring Tyne Daly. In addition to writing songs for the show with legendary lyricists Alan and Marilyn Bergman, she is the musical director and will compose the underscore. She has released three CDs as a solo artist (And All This, Embrace The Cross, and Christmas Peace); her instrumental music is a blend of classical, pop and jazz influences.

Concerts are free; Wine and Chocolate pairings (21 and over) are $20 in addition to Festival of Arts admission. Limited seating available in reserved section for an additional $25 per person by calling (800) 487-3378.
