Portal Gives Parental Access to Key Info
Parents Encouraged to Sign Up for Accounts
Want to access your child’s report cards online, change emergency contact information electronically, or monitor period-by-period attendance? Sign up for a Parent Portal account through your school site. In the 2013-2014 school year, parents with portal accounts will have the ability to use this online system to register for school, update student demographic and emergency contact information, view daily attendance reports, print report cards and unofficial transcripts, and download important documents directly from the portal. Please note that parent portal is NOT the same thing as School Loop. As a reminder, you need your child’s student identification number and a special access code to register with the Parent Portal. Roundups Offer Info on Kindergarten
Students Must Turn 5 by Oct. 1 to Start School in September
Families preparing to send their children off to school for the first time in the fall can visit elementary campuses in the Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) during Kindergarten Roundup meetings in the month of February. All 36 elementary CUSD schools will hold informational meetings that will last about an hour to provide families with important information regarding kindergarten programs and distribute registration materials. A schedule of roundup dates and times is available online.Families should bring proof of residence to receive their registration packets. If families intend to apply for a school of choice during the Open Enrollment period, they may attend a roundup at their preferred site. Children must be 5 years old on or before Oct. 1, 2013 to begin kindergarten. If they miss the cut-off date, they may be eligible for the District’sTransitional Kindergarten program.

Announce New Partnership
Online Programs to Work with University Faculty, Students
Brandman University, a part of the Chapman University System, today announced a new partnership with the Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD) to enhance the online and virtual learning of California Preparatory Academy and Capistrano Virtual School (CVS) students. The University partnership was unanimously approved by the CUSD Board of Trustees at its January 23 meeting. The new partnership addresses several goals outlined in CUSD’s strategic plan including strengthening community partnerships, aligning instruction to achieve high levels of learning for all students, collaborating in teams to focus on high levels of learning, and refining alternative programs for students.-more-

State Title, Orchestra Honored
CVHS Music Groups Earn Several Honors
Another year, another title for the CVHS Black and Gold Brigade. The CVHS marching band recently captured its fourth consecutive Southern California Judges Association, State of California Championship. The Brigade was also awarded first place for their performance in Percussion and Auxiliary Group. This marks the end of an undefeated season for the CVHS Black and Gold Brigade who also captured their first Black Opal Class Title at the Winter Guard Association of Southern California’s Marching Band Open Series (MBOS) Title. The Black and Gold Brigade won awards for high music and high visual in the Black Opal Class at the MBOS Championships. In addition, the Capistrano Valley High School (CVHS) Advanced Orchestra has been selected to perform at the 2013 California State Music Educators Conference in Fresno later this month. CVHS was selected through a blind audition process, and is the only high school orchestra performing at this year’s conference. In addition to the String Orchestra’s performance, Concert Master Hao Zhou, a sophomore, will perform in theAmerican String Teachers Association’s Concerto Competition, Showcase Winners Recital. Hao is also a member of the school tennis team and ATMS program.

ANHS Orchestra Performs at
Regional Music Conference
Students Serve as Demonstration Group
The Aliso Niguel High School Orchestra performed at the 75th Diamond Jubilee Celebration of the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association Music Education Conference last month at the Disneyland Hotel. About 600 music teachers attended sessions and clinics in association with the National Association of Music Merchants Show at the Anaheim Convention Center. The orchestra served as a demonstration group for two teacher sessions with world famous composer and music educator Richard Meyer, and then was the only orchestra selected to perform live during the celebration luncheon. The ANHS Orchestra is directed by teacher Albert Jeung.

Honored at Conference
Teachers Receive Awards from Peers
At the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association Music Education Conference, the two instrumental music teachers at Tesoro High School were honored at the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association Music Education Conference. Andy Magana received the Veteran Teacher Award, awarded to an outstanding educator with 20 years or more of music education service. Cathy Olinger received the honor of Honorary Life Member. This is the highest honor SCSBOA gives each year and is awarded to a music teacher that has exhibited the highest level in lifetime music education achievements.

Fellowship from UC San Diego
Opportunity for graduate students in education studies
Irma Fernandez, a resource specialist at Viejo Elementary School, has been selected as one of two recipients of the UC San Diego’s Chrispeels Fellowship for 2013. The fellowship was created in 2010 to provide support for UCSD graduate students in Education Studies as part of the campus’ Invent the Future Campaign. This fellowship is targeted toward students with experience in serving low income/underserved communities and demonstrates the desire and leadership skills to address issues of social and educational inequities. Fernandez received her undergraduate and graduate degrees from CSU San Marcos.

Open Enrollment Allows
Choice of Schools, Programs
Students, Families Can Find Best Academic Fit
Students in the Capistrano Unified School District can apply to one of 46 different academic programs during the annual Open Enrollment period that begins next month for language immersion elementary schools and in March for other programs. Applications will be available online at www.capousd.org, at local schools, and at the District Education Center, 33122 Valle Road, San Juan Capistrano. The application period for the language programs in Spanish and Mandarin will run from Monday, Feb. 4 to Friday, Feb. 22. The general Open Enrollment window for other open schools will be Monday, March 4 to Friday, March 29. Completed applications must be turned in between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. either at the school to which the child is applying or at the District Education Center (33122 Valle Rd., San Juan Capistrano). Applications for the Spanish and Mandarin language programs can only be turned in at the school of choice.-more-

District Schools Announce Spring
Dates for Open House Nights
Events Provide Parents Opportunity to Review Student Work
Schools in the Capistrano Unified School District have announced dates for their annual Open House nights, which will take place throughout the spring. Open House is an opportunity for parents to visit their child’s classroom and see some of the work that has been accomplished during the school year, Dr. Julie Hatchel, Assistant Superintendent, Education Services, said. “We look on this as an opportunity for parents to see the progress their student is making academically while giving them another opportunity to interact with teachers and understand what goes on in the classroom,” Hatchel said. “We definitely encourage parents to take part in the exciting evenings our schools have planned.” Open House events are scheduled from January to June.
