FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SUBJECT: GOVERNOR DECLARES SWINE FLU EMERGENCY – NO OC CASES REPORTED
Governor Schwarzenegger has declared a state of emergency in response to the swine flu. His action allows state agencies to enter into contracts to address the outbreak and to increase laboratory testing. Currently, there are no reported cases in Orange County. Orange County officials continue to be on the watch. California has 13 reported and confirmed cases.
There is no vaccine available at this time to protect against swine flu; however, it is never too early to take action to protect against typical flu infections. The Orange County Health Care Agency offers flu shots at its office in Santa Ana located at 1725 W. 17th Street from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and until 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays. The Buena Park office located at 6301 Beach Boulevard, Suite 103 offers shots on Mondays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Be proactive to protect yourself and your family by taking the following practical actions:
· Cover your mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
· Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
· Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
· If you get sick with the flu, stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from spreading infection.
