Last weekend, six exceptional Carl Hankey Elementary School students were crowned state champions at the Destination Imagination (DI) Competition in San Jose. Our champion hawks are Jessica Fleck, Shelby Capozzoli, Alli Maynard, Jessie McGee, Valerie Sierakowski, and Kamela Kadri and they will represent California at the global DI competition this May 26 – 29th in Tennessee.
Destination Imagination is an educational program where students work together in teams to solve problems creatively. Teams select a challenge and have to create a solution with no adult assistance. 100,000 students participate in DI competitions nationally.
Our team, WHAB (We Have Artificial Beards) chose the challenge “You’re Gonna Flip”.
In this challenge, teams must create an 8 minute play solely written and performed by the kids. Their solution must include: a character that “flips” its point of view, a handmade puppet, live visual art, and props and costumes developed by the kids. Our Hankey team’s ability to work together, think quickly, and incorporate humor in the improvisational, or “instant challenge” component of the competition guaranteed their impressive victory!
Our Carl Hankey team will be competing at the Global Finals in Knoxville, Tennessee May 26 – 29th with over 900 teams from all over the world. Our Hankey team is the only team from Mission Viejo that earned the right to compete at the global level.
Go Hawks!
