Ocean Institute Ocean Discovery Summer Camp for Ages 8-9

Registration is open for the Ocean Institute’s Ocean Discovery summer camp, a week-long ocean education experience for children ages 8-9. There are eight camps during summer 2012, beginning on each of the following dates: June 24, July 8, 15, 22 & 29, August 12, 19 & 26, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. each day.

 

Immerse yourself in the fun and fascinating work of a marine scientist. This program includes a squid dissection as well as explorations into the ocean world of animals like flatfish and sharks. Operate an ROV (remotely operated vehicle) in our 7,300 gallon oceanographic test tank. Other camp highlights include a variety of challenges with oceanographic equipment, exploring the Dana Point Marine Protected Area, a two-hour adventure cruise aboard the R/V Sea Explorer, and a field trip to the Sea Life Aquarium next door to Legoland in Carlsbad.

Ocean Institute to Offer Blue Whale Cruises

Blue whale watching season is coming to Southern California; join Ocean Institute scientists for the search for the world’s largest animal! The Ocean Institute will offer Blue Whale Safari cruises which take participants to the feeding grounds of the great blues. For ages 8+, under age 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Upcoming dates: June 29, July 6, 20 & 27, August 10, 17, 24 & 31 and September 14, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Institute marine biologists lead the cruises aboard the Sea Explorer, which makes use of equipment such as an acoustic array, plankton nets, video microscopes and a sediment sampler.

The cost of the whale watching cruises is $55 ($49 Ocean Institute members). A continental breakfast will be served; participants should bring a sack lunch. For more information, call (949) 496-2274.

Ocean Institute to Present 4th of July Fireworks Cruise

The Ocean Institute will present a sunset cruise with a unique opportunity to enjoy an evening of 4th of July fireworks on Thursday, July 4, 7 – 10 p.m. The cruise will be onboard the Institute’s R/V Sea Explorer; enjoy wine, appetizers and desserts.

Cost: $50 per adult, $40 per child, age 5-12. Must be age 5 or older. Information: (949) 496-2274 or www.ocean-institute.org.

Art, Science & the Sea Summer Program at the Ocean Institute

Registration opens March 15 for the Ocean Institute’s Art, Science and the Sea summer camp, a program that combines art and science into a three-hour exploration, on July 10 17 & 24, and August 7, 14 & 21, 1 – 4 p.m. each day. For ages 7-10.

The program is based on the Institute’s popular Artist by the Sea for Kids series. Each day, aspiring young artists work alongside a different featured artist who uses his/her own unique format to introduce a different element of ocean stewardship. Preceding the art lesson is a hands-on lab that explores each topic in depth.

Ocean Institute Open to the Public on Weekends – The Ocean Institute is open to the general public on Saturdays and Sundays, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Weekend visitors can enjoy special seasonal exhibits, as well as hundreds of living ocean animals, and shark and jellyfish feedings. Cost: $6.50 adults, $4.50 children ages 3-12. Or, with the purchase of a membership, a family can enjoy year-round free admission, benefit from member-only events and receive discounts on all other programs.

Visitors can also board one of the Ocean Institute’s sea-going vessels, the state-of-the-art R/V Sea Explorer or the historic tall ship Spirit of Dana Point. Cruises are an additional charge. For information, visit www.ocean-institute.org.
