Dear Parents,
As we near our semester finals next week (see schedules below), our faculty and I would like to ask for your cooperation and assistance regarding one important area: Each semester, we have a consistent problem with hundreds of students either “texting” or calling their parent(s) as soon as they complete a final exam in order to ask their parent(s) to call school and excuse them early from class, rather than the student having to wait until the end of the final period. (In fact, our Campus Supervisors have found that many students will ask to use the restroom during the final exam in part so that they can contact their parents by cell phone for just this reason.)
While we understand that some students will quite naturally finish their final exams earlier than others, and that they would therefore prefer to be excused as opposed to having to wait until the end of the period, this issue has become an increasing concern. As you can well imagine, with nearly 3,000 students, this practice can cause continuous disruptions to those still testing if other students are constantly being called out and released early during the testing period.
Here is what we are asking you to do to assist us with this issue:
1. Please inform your students that they are NOT to call or text you during final exam hours to request that you excuse them early from a final exam period – even if they have completed their exam. Instead, advise your student to remain quietly in the exam room and spend his/her extra time either studying for their next final exam or reading.
2. If you absolutely must have your student released early during an exam period for an already-scheduled appointment, please make sure that he/she goes to the attendance office prior to the start of the final exam period to obtain a release slip before the start of the final. We cannot disrupt final exams by sending call slips or telephoning classrooms during final exam periods. We want each student to be able to give a best effort on final exams, and in this way, there will be much less of a disruption to those in the classroom who are still testing.
