Mission Viejo, CA – Fatal overdose deaths now outnumber fatal car accidents in California with more than 400 accidental overdose deaths in Orange County alone, ages 15 to 25, in the last four years. In fact Orange County is second in the nation for fatal overdoses from prescription pills. With those startling statistics, one of the area’s largest dining and retail complexes, Kaleidoscope, together with the City of Mission Viejo, are joining in the fight by helping bring awareness to this growing life-threatening issue with a special event on Thursday, June 7 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., including a preview viewing of the short-length documentary Overtaken.
Overtaken is produced by two moms, Jodi Barber and Christine Brant, to highlight the struggles of addiction through the lives of young adults. Jodi’s son, Jarrod, died from an overdose of a prescription drug she had never heard of until the night he died. His peers had heard of it though and within weeks more young lives were gone and many more kids were left to battle addiction. Approved by school district superintendents across the country and featuring specialists in the fields of medicine and addiction, the film delivers accurate and up-to-date information on the type of drugs infiltrating our communities and how to help our youth avoid them.
This special event, to be held at Kaleidoscope located at 27741 Crown Valley Parkway, Mission Viejo, CA 92691, benefits The Angel Foundation, a non-profit organization focusing on drug awareness and overdose prevention.

Activities include: Message in a bottle – personal commitments to say “NO” to drugs, interactive chalk wall, photo booth, henna hand art, interactive Velcro wall, D.J., $5.00 meal deals offered by participating restaurants.

Kaleidoscope will then help sponsor California’s first ever corporate-hosted Relay for Life, benefiting the American Cancer Society, on Sunday, July 22 at 2 p.m. until Monday, July 23 at 2 p.m. Teams are now being formed and calling for team captains for this fundraising event, the 2012 Relay for Life of Ladera Ranch.
