LAGUNA BEACH, June 2009 —Taste of Afghani

The 1st Annual Afghani Cultural Fundraising Festival and Feast with highly acclaimed guest speaker Masaru Emoto, author of the best-seller Messages from Water, will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 18, at Khyber Pass — Afghanistan Fine Rugs and Collectables Galley and Cultural Center, 1970 Pacific Coast Highway (at Diamond Street).

Dr. Leonard Horowitz, outspoken human health rights advocate and author of more than 15 books on controversial health issues and spiritual wellness, will join Dr. Emoto, whose work was featured in the hit independent film “What the Bleep Do We Know?” The colorful evening fete will include a cultural feast accompanied by strolling Afghan musicians, showings by 20 top local artists (many of whom will be in attendance), a Gallery fashion show by Roya Tawfiq, local musicians, and a silent auction and raffle. All proceeds and donations as well as 20% of sales that evening of the gallery’,s rugs and jewelry will go to the Women’s Educational Center and Clinic and the Phoenix School for Children in Harot, Afghanistan.

“After living in the U.S. for 28 years,” says Sadiq Tawfiq, owner of Khyber Pass Gallery and founder of the two schools in Harot, “I know that giving women and children the same rights and opportunities as men is the best way to go.” In addition to empowering women and children in Afghanistan, another of Tawfiq’s quests is to bring healthy drinking water to his schools in Harot, which were also supported by grants from the Laguna Beach Rotary Club and International Orphan Care (IOC). The festival is sponsored by PristineHydro, a pure water company in Laguna Hills owned by Glen Caulkins, which will donate a portion of its sales at the festival to Tawfiq’s schools.

Art review will take place from 5 to 6 p.m. The Afghan buffet will begin at 6 p.m. Drs. Emoto and Horowitz will speak from 7 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $35 a person. To make reservations, call Khyber Pass at 949.233-1424. Space is limited. Valet parking will be available. The festival is registered under the Afghan Amity Society and IOC as a 501c organization.
