Chief of Police Services Presents Safe City Plan Annual Progress Report

At the May 4th City Council Meeting, Chief of Police Services Lt. Andy Ferguson, presented the annual Safe City Plan Progress Report. Implemented in 2001, the Safe City Plan identified the following five key areas for Police Services to focus its crime prevention efforts:
• Burglary and theft reduction
• Juvenile crime reduction
• Youth violence prevention
• Crime prevention for senior citizens
• Traffic accident reduction

Since the adoption of the Safe City Plan, the City has experienced a steady decline in Part 1 crimes with the past four years being the safest since incorporation.
According to the report, the City’s Neighborhood Watch and Business Watch Programs continue to attract community involvement with 276 Block Captains currently enrolled in the Neighborhood Watch Program, and 570 businesses participating in the City’s Business Watch Program. The City’s Emergency Preparedness and Crime Prevention programs continue to thrive with many residents taking advantage of the courses offered on topics such as identity theft, neighborhood preparedness, burglary prevention, etc.

Ferguson went on to report that when it comes to traffic safety, the number of traffic accidents in the City decreased from 340 in 2008 to 301 in 2009. Motor Cycle deputies work very closely with the City’s Traffic Engineer to address the many issues that affect traffic safety.

In summary, while Laguna Niguel continues to be one of the safest cities in Orange County, Lt. Ferguson cautioned that we must remain vigilant in our crime prevention efforts. Approximately 40% of thefts reported in 2009 occurred as a result of unlocked vehicles. It is easy for residents to let their guard down and become complacent in such a safe community, thereby enabling crimes of opportunity. He stressed the importance of keeping cars locked and valuable belongings out of sight.
