Charity

By Shelly Tippetts

I never thought that buying a lemonade stand would have such an impact on kids today. As a young child I had many lemonade stands but did not really know about charities to donate to. My daughter has wanted to make money by having a garage sale or by selling something in our neighborhood. Our community does not allow it. I thought this would be a great starting point to teach her how to make money, but to also learn about donating money.

We bought this great lemonade stand at Costco. This lemonade stand was very easy to assemble and very portable to move. We started our first lemonade stand on June 30th and made $59.00 dollars. $50.00 was donated to The Maddie James Foundation. My daughter and friends were so excited to do the next lemonade stand and donate to the next cause. We decided we would do another lemonade stand on May 7th. This time we made flyers and hung them at each of the gates and asked people to bring a used sports equipment. We were going to donate to Sportsgift.org. This is a great charity which my daughter and I have donated our time to quite often. I called the charity and we got a bin to put the used sports equipment in that we collected. I was overwhelmed by the response of just our neighbors that were not aware of a place that took used sports equipment for impoverished kids. We made $50.00 dollars cash that was donated to Sportsgift.org and a lot of used sports equipment.

We are in the works of trying to plan our next lemonade stand and next charity to donate to. I’m just a mom that thinks that teaching charity work at a young age is important. I hope that someday my daughter will continue to think it is important, too. This little girl’s name is Asia and she is 7 ½ with a dream of being an entrepreneur like both her parent’s.
