Walker Encourages Local Residents to Join the Breast Cancer Movement
Dana Point, California– Kim Tilly of Laguna Niguel, and Donna Kalez and Leslie Flynn Parker will join thousands of other dedicated women and men at the San Diego Breast Cancer 3-Day benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund. After months of training and fundraising, participants will walk 60 miles during three days to raise awareness and funds for critical research and community outreach programs.
Kim is a five year survivor of Breast Cancer. Diagnosed at age 45 with no family history, it took her by surprise. She was one of the lucky ones, through a general yearly exam, the physician’s assistant found a small lump. That is when the journey began. It starts with the mammogram, then the ultrasound, biopsy, bad news diagnosis, meetings with doctors, surgeons, oncologist, radiation technicians and tests. Surgery, recover, chemotherapy, radiation are all stops along the journey. Who knew her first tattoo would be that of a radiation marking! Through the love and support of family, friends and co-workers in Dana Point Harbor, she is in her fifth year of remission and playing competitive tennis and feeling terrific. “As a Breast Cancer 3-Day participant and survivor, I have an opportunity to celebrate breast cancer survivorship, honor those who lost their lives to the disease, and ultimately, have an enormous impact on awareness and funding for breast cancer research and community outreach programs,” said Kim Tilly. Putting together a fun event is a great way to help in the fundraising. We teamed up with Sunsets in Capistrano Beach who was willing to sponsor a“BUNCO FOR THE CURE”. This is a wonderful way to celebrate survivorship by having a great time and raising money for the Breast Cancer 3-Day walk at the same time.” My motto this year is “I’m walking 60miles in 3 days to find a cure, what will you do?”
In honor of survivorship and to help in the fundraising efforts, these three women will host a “BUNCO FOR THE CURE”. The BUNCO FOR THE CURE is sponsored by Sunsets in Capistrano Beach. Bunco is a fun and quick dice game that anyone can learn in a snap! Donation of $20 will include Bunco games, appetizers and No Host Cocktail Specials as well as lots of fun prizes. BUNCO FOR THE CURE is October 29th 6pm-9pm at SUNSETS located at 34700 Pacific Coast Highway, Capistrano Beach. All proceeds will go toward their fundraising efforts for the 3Day benefiting Susan G. Komen for the Cure. For reservations contact Donna at (949) 496-5794 ext. 16.
If you cannot join the fun at the BUNCO FOR THE CURE, but would like the opportunity to support the walk, please log on to www.The3Day.org, click the Donation Link and Sponsor a Participant and type in Donna Kalez or Leslie Flynn Parkery and it will send you to their fundraising site.
The San DiegoBreast Cancer 3-Day will start on Friday morning, November 20, 2009 and end with Closing Ceremonies on Sunday afternoon, November 22, 2009. The walkers will cover about 20 miles a day, traveling at their own pace. The walkers will be supported by hundreds of volunteer crew members who will provide meals, liquid and snack stops, gear transport, hot showers, portable restrooms, safety on the streets and 24-hour medical services.
The actual journey starts months in advance when walkers start training and raising the $2,300 required fundraising minimum. To help prepare for the Breast Cancer 3-Day, each walker is supported by coaches and online assistance that aid in all aspects of training and fundraising, while clinics, meetings, and training walks provide ongoing support.
