Lymphoma Survivor Rides 100 Miles to Raise $34,500 for Blood Cancer Research

Date:

Newport Coast
NEWPORT COAST, CALIF., – Cancer survivor Tim Lindenfelser of Newport Coast participated in the America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride around Lake Tahoe, a 100-mile bike ride on June 7, and raised $34,500 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Orange County/Inland Empire Chapter (LLS) through its Team In Training® (TNT) program. In TNT, participants compete in marathons, bike rides, hikes and triathlons to raise money for blood cancer research.
“It was an incredible experience,” he remarked, “riding alongside so many like-minded people for a great cause.”
Lindenfelser served as vice president and general manager of Broadcom, through the company’s formative years, before leaving to pursue other interests in 2003. In May 2008, he noticed an almond-sized lump near his groin. After a series of medical tests, he was diagnosed with stage IV non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. He underwent chemotherapy and took the medication Rituxan, whose researchers have been funded by the LLS.
By October, he was in full remission. Wanting to get back in shape and join the battle against cancer, he opted to join LLS’s Team In Training. He received full support in his training through TNT, and began fundraising through family and friends, as well as one major corporate donor, Research Affiliates, an investment management firm in Newport Beach. Additionally, he matched all funds raised. He noted, “My doctor tells me I have about a 50-50 chance of the cancer returning in the next 10 years. So, I’m certainly hoping for a cure.”
Lindenfelser plans to again be a part of America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride in 2010, this time not only as a participant, but a mentor, sponsoring other riders.
He has also modified his diet, and created a “Bucket List” (from the 2007 movie “The Bucket List”) of things he wants to do before he dies. Top on the list was to complete the America’s Most Beautiful Bike Ride. He’s also changed his outlook on things: “I focus on staying positive. When it comes to negative emotions like anger and stress, I have no time for them!”
