Mary’s Trail at the Nix Nature Center
WHAT: Dedicated to Mary Fegraus, founding executive director of Laguna Canyon Foundation, and funded by the Irvine Ranch Conservancy, Mary’s Trail is an easy, introductory quarter-mile loop for hikers of all ages and abilities. Adjacent to the Nix Nature Center, the trail provides park visitors of all ages and abilities with an introduction to the natural features found throughout the park. Interpretive signs along the trail engage visitors in using their senses of sight, smell and hearing to discover the coastal canyon habitat.
WHY: Mary’s Trail was conceived to link with Little Sycamore Canyon trails and the larger network within the 6,600-acre Laguna Coast Wilderness and surrounding parkland. It connects with Little Sycamore Canyon Trail, Barbara’s Lake Trail and the James Dilley Preserve and the Stagecoach North Trail.
WHERE: Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, Little Sycamore Canyon/James and Rosemary Nix Nature Center, 18751 Laguna Canyon Road, Laguna Beach, CA 92651. Road signage indicates the exit for the Nix Nature Center from Laguna Canyon Road/SR 133, approximately 3.5-miles south of the I-5/405 interchange and north of the 73 Tollroad.
WHO: Laguna Canyon Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, protecting and enhancing the South Coast Wilderness. LCF worked with OC Parks, the managers for Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, to design Mary’s Trail and its interpretive exhibits under an agreement with the County of Orange.
