A television program highlighting the work of a local facility dedicated to improving the lives of people with disabilities through horseback therapy is now airing in Mission Viejo.
Mission Viejo Television produced a special “MVTV News” segment about the great work of the Shea Therapeutic Riding Center.
Nestled in the wilderness on 7 acres in San Juan Capistrano, the Shea Center serves nearly 800 people annually through therapy programs that use horseback riding to help with physical, occupational and speech therapy. Over the past decade, the center has grown from a small facility run out of two trailers to a state-of-the-art equestrian center with a $3 million annual budget, according to a recent report.
The center’s staff is skilled in developing and delivering therapeutic programs to address physical and cognitive challenges such as cerebral palsy, spinal cord and brain injury, muscular dystrophy, Down syndrome, multiple sclerosis, autism spectrum disorders and other impairments.
“The horse is just an amazing treatment tool, and as a physical therapist, it’s one of those tools that I couldn’t do without,” said Program Director Janelle Robinson.
See the MVTV segment here and tune in daily at 7 p.m. (except Tuesdays) to Cox Channel 30 or AT&T Channel 99.
