Tapestry, a Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Mission Viejo has chosen a new minister, the Rev. Kent Doss.
Unlike many denominations, Unitarian Universalists select and vote on their own religious leaders through a process with the national organization, the Unitarian Universalist Association in Boston.
On Sunday, May 19, the Tapestry members voted unanimously to call Doss as their settled minister. The Rev. Doss will assume the position as minister in August 2013. He formerly was minister at the UU Fellowship of Laguna Beach and interned at Orange Coast Unitarian Universalist Church in Costa Mesa.
The Rev. Doss, a lifelong Unitarian Universalist attended seminary in Denver, CO where he attended Iliff School of Theology in Denver, CO. In June 2007 Doss graduated with distinction from Iliff School of Theology with a Master of Divinity and a concentration in Justice and Peace Studies. At the time of his graduation Doss also was recognized as Iliff School of Theology’s Student of the Year for 2007 for his academic achievements and campus leadership.
Between his B.A. from the University of Oklahoma and seminary, Doss spent 2002 as a volunteer with the Peace Corps and did a short internship at the UUA Washington Office for Faith and Advocacy. Currently he is the chair of the Laguna Beach Interfaith Council, and a volunteer leader with the UU Legislative Ministry’s marriage equality efforts.
Rev. Doss first came to the ministry through his work for social justice issues, and he continues a deep interest in these issues today. His vision for the future of Unitarian Universalism includes congregations that are deeply embedded within their community, providing a relevant message of hope, and working to make a tangible difference in the world.
“We in Tapestry feel very fortunate that we found a religious leader who shares our congregational mission and vision for the future,” said Keith Tuominen, Tapestry president. “We are confident that Rev. Doss will lead us into an era of growth and continued involvement in our community.” Doss will begin his full-time ministry at Tapestry in early August 2013.
The Tapestry congregation has resided in Mission Viejo since 1995 after a merger between two UU congregations in south Orange County. Tapestry has current membership of 140. It meets weekly at 10:00 a.m. at 23436 Madero in Mission Viejo.
