The new 2011 year is here with some new real estate laws governing the purchase and sale of our homes. Senate bill 183 states that carbon monoxide detectors must be installed in all existing single-family dwelling units being sold beginning January 1, 2011 and no later than July 1, 2011. The carbon monoxide detectors installed must be ones that have been certified by the State Fire Marshall.
These detectors can be purchased at home improvement stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot, and also Costco, Target, and Walmart. The installation can be as easy as plugging the detector into a wall socket or upgrading your existing smoke alarms with a combination smoke detector and carbon monoxide detectors all-in-one unit. Carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas that is created by incomplete combustion that kills hundreds of people each year. Common causes of the build up of carbon monoxide in the home are open flames, blocked chimneys, malfunctioning space heaters and water heaters, or a car running in the garage.
