News and Activities: Come and Join In The Fun – Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center

Active SeniorsAs part of an ongoing effort to improve services for Mission Viejo residents, the City is seeking input from older adults regarding community services programs and facilities offered by the City.

Survey responses will guide the City in developing plans to complement and enhance programs and services for seniors. Folks who complete the short Senior Needs Assessment form available here will have a chance to win a free 3-month pass to the Recreation and Tennis Centers or an excursion.

Completed forms can be mailed to or dropped off at the Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center (24932 Veterans Way) or emailed torecreation@cityofmissionviejo.org. The deadline to enter the prize drawing is 5 p.m. October 31.

Intuitive arts facilitator Joy E Butler helps folks to interpret their dreams for life solutions in a series of workshops beginning October 5.  Learn simple techniques for developing your intuition when making decisions about relationships, work, finances and more.  The 2-hour workshops take place on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. through November 16. Common cancers as we age

Over the past several years, cancer treatments have advanced to the point where many patients diagnosed with cancer can be cured or treated.  Dr. John Cheng of Mission Hospital will provide an update on various common cancers, the risk factors, prevention and current treatments.  The free program is at 1 p.m. on Thursday, October 6. It’s Your Money

This series offers objective education about your money; fixed income investments; annuities; mutual funds; and long term care insurance.  No sales of product or services. The program is from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. each Thursday from October 7 through November 3. Register by calling 949-470-3062.

Constitution 101

Who were the “Founding Fathers?” What are the values and ideals found in the Declaration of Independence? What happened at the Constitutional Convention in the summer of 1787? Find out the answers to these questions and more by attending Constitution 101 led by retired history teacher Bob Hayes. Travel Talk

The hottest trends in travel are river cruising and multigenerational vacations. Travel experts Chris Meyer and Tami Clingan will share what people love about river cruising and secrets to making your multigenerational trip spectacular. Elk’s Dinner Dance

Celebrate the fall season with dinner, a no-host bar, music, dancing and prizes. Hosted by Mission Viejo Elk’s Lodge #2444, this dinner dance is from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on October 9. Fall Meditation Series

Learn how to manage holiday tension with simple mediation skills in this free program from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on October 11. Register by calling 949-470-3062.

Healing Journeys through Meditation

Experience various topics and types of meditations infused with positive energy in this free program from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday October 11 and October 18.  Sessions are educational, experiential and calming. Targeting Seniors-Financial Scams

This presentation at 10 a.m. on October 13 provides information on scams used to target seniors. A variety of current scams will be discussed including what scammers say to entice victims, red flags to beware of and tips to avoid being scammed. Resources will also be provided to inform people of what to do if they have been contacted by a scammer or know someone who has. Registration is available by calling 949-470-3062.

Senior Sunday

Enjoy refreshments, entertainment by “The Girls Next Door” 1940s vocal trio and BINGO during this fun Senior Sunday sponsored by Atria del Sol on Sunday, October 16. Parkinson’s Disease Update

Parkinson’s disease is the second leading neurodegenerative disorder, affecting close to a million Americans.  On October 18 at 1 p.m., Dr. Joey Gee, chief of the Neuro-Stroke department at Mission Hospital, will discuss recent scientific findings, new medications and surgical options to help manage the disease, while improving quality of life. Communication & Boundaries

This two-part series focuses on how we communicate including verbal and non-verbal ques and how to communicate more effectively in your everyday life. The series will also touch on how to set boundaries when communicating and managing conflict. The program is at 10 a.m. on Friday, October 21 and October 28. Register by calling 949-470-3062.

Holiday Recipe Book

What better way to celebrate family traditions than by capturing delicious recipes in a beautiful handmade recipe book? In this fun and easy class at 10 a.m. on October 25, you will create a fabulous recipe book to spice up your holidays. Walking Pole Demonstration

Join naturalist Mike Clayton as he leads a demonstration on the use and benefits of walking poles at 11 a.m. on October 26. From endurance to posture and balance, the benefits are many. Mike will also discuss the different types of poles available and the best place to purchase them. Poles are not required for the demonstration.  Register by calling 949-470-3062.

Sleep Disorders

Are you getting enough sleep? If not, join MemorialCare Medical group at 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 27 and learn about different sleep disorders and ways for you to get more sleep. Registration is available by calling 949-470-3062.

You can help support our senior services program by purchasing tickets for a chance to win a beautiful basket.  The winners will be selected during Santa’s Arrival on Sunday, November 27.  Donations of new, unused items are sought for the baskets and can be dropped off at information desk at Norman P. Murray Community and Senior Center by Friday, October 21.
