City Receives Award for Gateway Specific Plan

The  Laguna Niguel Gateway Specific Plan has received the Outstanding

Comprehensive Planning Award for 2012 from the Orange Section of the American

Planning Association (APA).  The Orange Section APA annually recognizes exemplary

plans, planners, and development projects in several categories that reflect the

diversity and complexity of the planning profession.  The Gateway Specific Plan will

now compete for a state level award from the California Chapter of APA in October

2012.

The Gateway Specific Plan provides for up to 2,994 residential units and 2.26 million

square feet of retail, office, entertainment, hotel and other non-residential uses.  It

allows existing businesses to remain, but creates opportunities for the private

market to attract and develop new land uses that will gradually transition the

Gateway area into an attractive and desirable transit and pedestrian-oriented urban

village.

The Gateway Specific Plan includes the approximate 315-acre area along Crown

Valley Parkway, Cabot and Forbes Roads, bounded by Interstate 5, San Joaquin Hills

Transportation Corridor, and the City limits to the north and south.

Recipients of 2012 Orange Section APA Awards will be celebrated at the Awards

Ceremony on Wednesday, May 16. Orange Section APA is devoted to advancing the

science of physical, economic, environmental, and social planning at the local,

regional, state, and national levels.
