The Department of Theatre Arts at Saddleback College is thrilled to present Picasso at the Lapin Agile by Steve Martin on March 13 through the 22nd in the Studio Theatre.

Directed by Mark McQuown, this long-running Off-Broadway comedy places Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso in a Parisian cafe in 1904 just before the renowned scientist transformed physics with his theory of relativity and the celebrated painter set the art world afire with cubism.

One might wonder why Elvis is integrated into the plot.

Come and see this imaginative play and find out.

Saddleback’s Speech and Debate Team to Perform at Showcase Fundraiser

The Saddleback Speech and Debate Team is thrilled to perform award-winning speeches about social change and Reader’s Theatre presentations at its Showcase Fundraiser on Friday, March 6th at 5:00 p.m. in the McKinney Theatre. Tickets are $7 at the door.

With Larry Radden retiring as Forensics co-Director and coach, it is fitting that his final production of competitive reader’s theatre is in homage to his interpersonal investment in students. He therefore, is presenting a piece on learning disorders. According to Larry, the research has led to understand differences in learning styles, and how to more effectively access students on individualistic levels.

Larry says, “It is my goal to inform, persuade, enlighten, and of course entertain. These have been my impetus and my muse to write this year’s show. Dean of Fine Arts & Media Technology Bart McHenry stated, “Larry has worked hard as co-director to bring the team to a point where he feels comfortable handing off the team for a well-deserved break while he focuses solely on teaching speech classes.”

In a second reader’s theatre presentation, forensics coach Lucas Ochoa and his students will explore the theme of dirty cops and the controversial perception of modern day officers. The literature will cover reasons why police officers become corrupt. Furthermore, the theatre will attempt to bridge a dialogue between citizens and officers to offer a peaceful resolution during this tumultuous time. The underlying themes of the show are redemption, forgiveness, justice, and love. The show is called:Dirt.

The Saddleback Forensics Team started in the 1970s and prides itself on offering students the ability to create innovative arguments for future writing and speaking engagements to strengthen their critical thinking skills and to better communicate with others. On the forensics team, students write, rehearse, and perform at 6-7 tournaments against students from Universities and Community Colleges to qualify for the national tournament. The students representing Saddleback at the national tournament have placed above several competitors representing institutions throughout the year, including: Concordia University, Point Loma, California State University, Los Angeles, California State University, Long Beach, and UCLA.
