As it always does, the harsh heat of summer gives way to the tempered warmth of autumn. Shadows come earlier with shortened days, the familial rules of school-nights versus weekends are once again enforced. The scent of lotion is exchanged for the aroma of books, binders and new computer equipment. One season has ended, another is beginning. In celebration of all that the departing months brought and in anticipation of autumn’s fullness, you are invited to once again gather here in our own home for an autumnal celebration featuring the award winning cuisine of Chef William Barber and the Orange Coast College Culinary Interns, assorted wines, live music, complimentary babysitting for the little ones…all at the same reduced price of last year of only $90 per person. Acknowledging our community’s environmental awareness while also affording novel economy, an Opportunity Drawing for ‘A Family of Bikes’ (in lieu of silent or live auction items) will culminate the evening. Following a year of economic uncertainty, let us raise our glasses, share laughter, food and dance; let us toast the life and blessings we have harvested in the midst of adversity.

As mentioned above our 2009 Wine and Food Festival is fast approaching on the weekend of October 3-4, and will again feature a two-part event: The BIG Saturday event of live music, great food and limitless wine and martinis….followed by the Sunday experience of premier local restaurants offering their FABULOUS food for RECSSION-friendly prices. Another nifty adaptation for this year is the ‘Family of Bikes’ RAFFLE. For a reduced price of only $30 per ticket you have the opportunity to win the entire ‘FAMILY’ of bicycles on display outside the Grand Hall (yep, all of them!)…or select up to $1500 worth of merchandise from ‘Buy My Bikes’ of San Juan Capistrano. Environmentally friendly and obviously gas-efficient, bikes for local touring with exercise for the whole family can be yours…but of course you need to purchase a raffle ticket. Tickets will go on sale NEXT weekend and will continue to be sold right up to the drawing on Saturday evening, October 3rd. (Please note that the winner of the drawing will be responsible for immediately paying Corpus Christi the necessary IRS taxes of $420 prior to taking possession of the bikes or merchandise.)
Participants of our Corpus Christi Maintenance Ministry are cordially invited to the first -ever “TGIF Maintenance Ministry Get-Together” THIS Friday September 18th from 5-6:30 pm on the lawn. In celebration of ‘BACK TO SCHOOL’, our next CORPUS CHRISTI DINER’S NIGHT is scheduled for Thursday, September 24th at the NEW Elephant Bar Restaurant in Laguna Hills Mall. They have 50 new food items and according to our advance team, the food is GOOD and reasonably priced (they also have a kid’s menu selection!) More to come…but please get it on your calendar for the 24th of September!
Please be advised that Father Ken Rudnick S.J., after finishing a retreat-filled summer, will be returning to a more regular monthly service amongst us. This month he is scheduled to celebrate the 10 and 12 Noon Masses NEXT Sunday, September 20th. Thanks.

Please note that ALL the Masses on the weekend of October 3-4 will be celebrated OUTDOORS on the lawn…in your conversations with Jesus please mention to him that we would appreciate clear skies and no rain for that weekend! Thanks!!!!
Our thanks and appreciation go to Kevin Tiber and Ed Jordan for their oversight of this past week’s ‘Corpus Christi Economic Summit’ Thanks as well to each of our presenters for sharing of their time and professional talent. Please note as well that Farmer’s and Merchant’s Bank graciously funded the expenses associated with the evening….THANK YOU Farmers and Merchants!!!
Please note that ALL SCHEDULING for the use of Parish facilities is handled through our Web Calendar Coordinator, Maribeth Cooper. You may access the calendar and protocols for the scheduling of parish space via our website, www.avcatholics.org, click on the ‘calendar’ tab…and follow the directions. Until you receive an e-mail confirmation from Maribeth please do not advertise your event or presume that you automatically have the space. If your event is something about which people may be calling the Parish Offices to obtain more information, please make sure you send an e-mail description (the e-mail addresses are listed on the website) of the event to Betty and Susie…and a phone call doesn’t hurt either (389-9008). This applies even if you are going to be hosting an event offsite for your group or just advertising something by staffing a table outside after the Masses, Maribeth Cooper and our Calendar keeps us all on the same page and helps us avoid gridlock.
When it comes to legislation, the Catholic Bishops offer their views on the Universal Health Care debate…
Interestingly, a number of parishioners were not aware that the United States Catholic Bishops have long held a positive advocacy position toward the issue of Universal Health Care.
The United States Catholic Conference of Bishops recently restated their criteria as follows: *a truly universal health policy with respect for human life and dignity *access for all with a special concern for the poor and inclusion of legal immigrants *pursuing the common good and preserving pluralism including freedom of conscience and variety of options *restraining costs and applying them equitably across the spectrum of payers. Because of the critical nature of this issue, the Bishops have established a special Web site: www.usccb.org/healthcare. Please check this site for updates and assorted resources that outline the Bishop’s principles and priorities as well as fundamental problems in assorted current bills.
