Construction Underway At Crown Valley Park
Starting Mon. June 9, construction will get underway in
preparation for the new and exciting park improvements
coming to Crown Valley Park later this year. Park patrons
should expect delays and allow more time to get to and
from activities as parking will be limited while crews
upgrade the water and sewer systems. Parking is also
available on Crown Valley Parkway adjacent to the lower
soccer field.
In the Fall, construction will begin on Phase 1 of a major improvement project at
Crown Valley Park that will include: the installation of a new splash pad with dynamic
features such as squirting, spraying and cascading water; new playground equipment
set in a “Wildland Cove” theme; a newly renovated amphitheater, and a new
restroom building complete with a family restroom and changing facilities.
We thank you for our patience and understanding as we move forward with this
project.
Council Member Laurie Davies Honored by SCORE

On May 23, 2014, SCORE Orange County presented Council
Woman Laurie Davies with the “Extraordinary Advancement
of Orange County SCORE by a Non-Member” Award at the
Laguna Niguel Chamber of Commerce monthly breakfast
meeting. “This annual award is presented rarely and only when
there is significant reason to recognize outstanding
accomplishments” said David Harris, Vice Chairman Outreach,

business services within the community while maximizing SCORE’s resources. As a
result of Laurie’s tireless effort, the City of Laguna Niguel has become the benchmark.
“Simply put, nobody is better” said Harris. Laurie spearheaded the program but also
had tremendous support from City Staff and the Laguna Niguel Chamber of
Commerce.

“City Family Fights Back” Team Is Top
Fundraiser at Relay for Life Event
The City of Laguna Niguel’s “City Family Fights Back” team was the top
fundraising team at the Laguna Niguel Relay for Life event held this
past weekend at Niguel Hills Middle School.
The team raised $4,250 which will go toward the American Cancer Society’s mission of
eliminating cancer by helping people get well, stay well, finding a cure and fighting
back. Mayor Pro Tem Jerry McCloskey, himself
a cancer survivor, helped kick off the event by
welcoming all those in attendance and joined
in the survivor’s lap.
Council Members Laurie Davies, Jerry Slusiewicz
and Robert Ming also participated and walked
with the City Family Fights Back team.
The 24-hour family-oriented
event was filled with fun activities and
entertainment for the entire family. When not
walking or running, participants camped out and listened to local bands perform while
enjoying refreshments donated by local
restaurants and grocers.
At nightfall, during an emotional luminaria
ceremony that illuminated the entire track,
participants lit candles in memory of those who
lost the battle to cancer and to honor and support
all those still fighting the disease. For more

City Council Set To Adopt Healthy
Parks Ordinance
The City Council on Wednesday moved one step closer to
prohibiting smoking in all City recreational areas when, on a
4-1 vote, it directed city staff to place a proposed Healthy
Parks Ordinance as presented on the June 17th
City Council
agenda for adoption. If adopted, the Healthy Parks Ordinance would prohibit smoking,
including E-cigarettes, in all City recreational areas open to the public including: parks,
picnic areas, playgrounds, gardens, athletic fields and sports facilities, skateboard
parks, and other open space. Violation would be an infraction punishable by a fine of
$100 for the first offense, $200 for the second offense, and $500 for the third and
subsequent offences.
Representatives from the American Lung Association and American Heart Association
attended the meeting and spoke in favor of the ordinance citing the dangers of
exposure to secondhand smoke.
Council Member Robert Ming voted against the ordinance stating while he
understood and supported the Council’s desire to protect the public from the adverse
impacts of secondhand smoke, he believed the language of the ordinance was overly
broad and too restrictive.
If adopted on June 17th, the ordinance will go into effect 30 days after its adoption.
City Adopts FY 2014-15 Operating Budget and
Capital Improvement Program
At its regular meeting on June 3rd, the City Council adopted a $41.6 million Operating
Budget and Capital Improvement Program for FY 2014-2015. The budget was adopted
following a lengthy budget workshop on April 15
th
at which the Council received public
input and reviewed the proposed budget in detail.
Given the current economic challenges and the State’s ongoing budget crisis, the City
is pleased to report that the FY 2014-2015 budget maintains all existing service levels
and programs and provides $9.2 million in funding for the Annual Capital
Improvement Program. This year’s Capital Improvement Program includes funding for:
the Crown Valley Community Park Master Plan, Citywide Street Rehabilitation
Program, Crown Valley Median Runoff Elimination, and future Laguna Niguel Gateway
Public Improvement Projects.
The FY 2014-15 Adopted Budget and Capital Improvement Program will be available
on the City’s website early next week.
