Tanzania Book Drive – Help Give The Gift of Education to Tanzania
Most of the students at Stella Maris Medium-Primary School are orphans or extremely disadvantaged. They all come from very poor backgrounds. Most of them have to walk up to 1 hour to get to school. Moshi Tanzania is an area just at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro.
The spectacular natural beauty of the surrounding area nearly hides the true reality that the area is incredibly impoverished. Tanzania has some of the poorest standards of living in the world. Only 44% of the people have access to improved drinking water sources and 70% don’t have access to electricity. In education, only around 25% get enrolled in secondary school.
There are 569 children with 8 core subjects and the book to student ratio is roughly 1:100 to 1:25 depending on the subject. Many classes have only one text book for the entire class to share. Tanzania text books are only $7 to $10 per book.
Our goal is dramatically and permanently leave a mark at this school by not just changing their lives when we are there helping, but to leave behind a better place for the children to learn. We want to leave them textbooks!
Laurie Curran, a certified teachers with Capistrano Unified School District, with 23 years of teaching experience, is the Education Coordinator for this event. “It is a chance of a lifetime to come to a school like Stella Maris and work with the children. We want to truly make a lasting difference to this community”, Laurie stated.
