RECYCLING NEEDS YOUR HELP!
The NHMS Booster Club is in urgent need of parents volunteers in order to keep the Recycle Wednesday program running successfully.    If you can be available on Wednesday mornings before school starts, and offer once a week, once a month or any amount of time you can give then WE NEED YOU!   Collection is at the exit of the school every Wednesday morning and all we need is some smiling volunteers to assist with unloading cans, bottles and newspapers from cars and sorting the recyclables into bags!  The recycling program funds many things at NHMS, including providing funds for the Special Education Department to enhance their curriculum.  If you are willing to offer your time to NHMS, please email nhmsbooster@gmail.com with your availability.  Thank you –
CELL PHONES IN THE PARKING LOT
Parents – In the interest of student safety, we ask that you please refrain from using your hand held cell phones while driving through the NHMS parking lot to pick up/drop off your children.  This is unsafe (as well as against the law) because of the distraction it causes to the driver.  Thank you in advance for your cooperation on this matter.
PTSA BUSINESS SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITY
During 2012-2013, the Niguel Hills Middle School PTSA was able to support our school by allocating over $50,000 in funds for school assets and programs.  The PTSA is now offering opportunities for businesses to be recognized for their contributions to our “Support Our Sharks Campaign”.  Business sponsors may be featured in the 2012-2013 school directory, on the PTSA web site, and listed in a school newsletter which is mailed to the families of our over 1,200 students.  The deadline for recognition in the directory is Friday, October 11, 2013. Please see the PTSA web site for more information, www.nhmsptsa.org, and click on the “Sponsor Link” on the top right hand side.
SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR IS COMING!!!!
The annual PTSA Scholastic Book Fair will take place Monday, October 14th through Friday, October 18th.  The Fair will be held in Room 217, which is located in the back of the school, accessed via the black top.  Not only does the Book Fair help raise funds to purchase essential classroom and library resources, it encourages reading among our students.
The Book Fair offers students access to books at affordable prices that are specifically selected to appeal to middle school students’ interests. Brochures will be going home with students next week, highlighting some of the newest, most popular teen titles.  Students will be visiting the Fair with their English classes during designated time slots throughout the week and are also welcome to shop during their lunch times or before school starts.  Please send money with your child if they would like to purchase a book.  For your convenience, ONLINE shopping will be available again this year, providing access to a bigger selection of titles.

Stay tuned for more information on Fair hours and volunteering opportunities next week.  If you have any questions, please contact Debbie Van Hoomissen at vanhoomissen@cox.net
STUDENT PTSA MEETING THIS THURSDAY, OCTOBER 3
Our first student PTSA general meeting will be this Thursday October 3rd in the Blue Commons from 8:30 am to 9:30 am.  Our guest speaker will be Dr. Ira Raibon.  He is considered the father of hip hop and performs on 40 instruments.  He has worked with top artists such as The Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin and The Staples. Recently, Earth Wind & Fire opened for him. Come hear him play his favorite music and talk about how it was working with all those great musical groups.
Come make a difference!  We will also be voting on the remaining positions and new community service projects.  Come run for a position or bring your ideas for new projects.  For more information contact Katherine Amoukhteh at kamouk8@gmail.com.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS ON CAMPUS
We have had a number of students arrive at school on their birthday with huge bunches of balloons as a celebratory gift.  We ask that if you are giving balloons to your child that they are of a reasonable size…something that won’t become a distraction or block views in the classroom. If the balloons are too huge, we may have to hold them in the office.  It can also become a problem if parents bring boxes of cupcakes or donuts for their child to hand out at lunch for their birthday.  Students will be approached by people they don’t know, of receive undue pressure to give cupcakes to certain children.  Please save those types of celebrations for when your child gets home.  Thank you for your cooperation on this matter.
PTSA REFLECTIONS PROGRAM
EXPRESS yourself through the ARTS by participating in PTSA’s REFLECTIONS program this year!

This year’s theme is “BELIEVE, DREAM, INSPIRE,” and entries can be created within any of the following six categories: visual arts, photography, literature, film/video production, musical composition or dance choreography.

ALL ENTRIES ARE DUE OCTOBER 8TH and will be displayed at a very special art gallery evening hosted at Moulton Elementary School on Wednesday, October 16th from 6 – 7:30.

Niguel Hills will be sponsoring the dessert/drink table at this event, so we are asking for baked good donations in exchange for shark bait.  All baked goods need to be delivered to the front office by noon on October 16th.

For more information, including student entry forms and rules/guidelines for each art category, visit cucptsa.com.  Entry forms will also be available at the front office. Contact Emi McCarter at emimccarter@gmail.com for additional questions.

HOMEWORK CLUB BEGINS OCTOBER 14
Homework club begins on Monday, October 14th.  Permission slips are available at the front office and on school loop.  We will be accepting applications starting Friday, September 20th at the front office.  Please carefully read the Homework Club permission slip.  There is limited space, so spots will be filled on a first come, first served basis.
Homework Club is on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.  There is no Homework Club on Tuesdays and 10/31/13, 12/19/13, 2/6/14 and 2/13/14.  If you have any questions, please contact the office at 234-5360.
