Outgoing Chief of Police Services recognized

Date:

Captain Quyen Vuong, who has managed Police Services since January 2018, was recognized for his outstanding service to this community by the City Council on Tuesday.  Captain Vuong was transferred to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department’s headquarters to head up a special unit. The City is in the process of selecting a new Chief of Police Services, which should be announced in the coming week.

During Tuesday’s meeting, Mayor Wendy Bucknum spoke about some of Captain Vuong’s accomplishments for this safe City. He was responsible for the local management and deployment of patrol, investigations, emergency management, school safety, special enforcement teams, and public safety for major City events in Mission Viejo, which is one of the Sheriff’s Department’s largest contract cities at more than 18 square miles with a population of more than 96,000.

“Captain Vuong’s efforts read like a storied book,” Mayor Bucknum said. “He worked to implement the Take Me Home Program; increased employment of patrol rifles; and the transition of less lethal shotguns to less lethal munition launchers. He identified budgetary savings by updating staff and vehicle deployments, among other efforts. He also expanded Mission Viejo Police Services’ social media presence  … Captain Vuong set a shining example to all with his selfless work ethic and attention to detail, and Mission Viejo is a better place because of his commitment, professionalism, unyielding support, and pride in serving the City and its citizens.”

Mayor Pro Tem Ed Sachs and Fire Chief Rob Capobianco had some fun with Captain Vuong before reiterating his vast contributions and how much he will be missed.

In other Council news, Council Members gave the green light for this year’s Orange County Triathlon and received an interesting update from the Orange County Housing Finance Trust.

On May 10, the City Council will consider the Planning and Transportation Commission’s recommendations to deny ValueRock Realty’s zone change request for the Gardens property at the corner of La Paz and Marguerite.

Council meetings start at 6 pm in the Council Chamber at 200 Civic Center. Meetings are streamed live on the City’s website and air on Cox Channel 30 and AT&T U-Verse Channel 99. Residents are encouraged to sign up for the City’s eNewsletter and follow the City’s official social media sites for the most accurate, up-to-date information.
