HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR! Friends of MIP had a Bake Sale after school today to celebrate the beginning of Chinese New Year.

Did you know?

Year of the SNAKE

The Chinese year 4711 begins on Feb. 10, 2013.
Those born in snake years are wise, charming, gregarious, introverted, generous, and smart.

Chinese New Year is celebrated over 15 days? It is the longest and most important of the traditional Chinese holidays.

All of our Bergeson children will experience Chinese New Year on Monday with a short assembly featuring our Mandarin Immersion students who will be singing 2 songs and some traditional Kung Fu and Chinese Lion Dancers. If your children are performing in the assembly, we will set up some chairs in the back of the MPR for adults so that children can sit in the front. Two assemblies will be held at 10 and 11 AM.

Fun Facts

New Year’s Eve Dinner is the most important meal for the Chinese.
Red Envelopes containing money are passed out during Chinese New Year’s celebrations.
Fireworks/Firecrackers are usually strung on a long fused string so it can be hung down. Once ignited, the firecracker explosions are thought to scare away evil spirits.
Clothing mainly featuring the color red or bright colors is commonly worn throughout the Chinese New Year because it was once believed that red could scare away evil spirits and bad fortune. In addition, people typically wear new clothes from head to toe to symbolize a new beginning in the new year. Wearing new clothes also symbolizes having more than enough things to use and wear in the new year. Red is a color of good luck.
Cleaning is a way to “get rid of the old and welcome the new”. Complete cleaning of the house is done a few days before the New Year.
Decorations are red in color and throughout the house to welcome the New Year. The most popular New Year decorations are upside down fu, lanterns, papercutting, Door God, etc.

USED MUSIC INSTRUMENTS: A request from a Don Juan Avila Middle School student.

Help me continue to help our schools by contributing to my “LET THE BEAT GO ON” project. I am collecting your old instruments and donating them to the CUSD music programs to help them meet the goal of providing free instruments for any student who wants to play a wind or string instrument. This will allow our music programs to grow and stay strong. I will pick up your old instruments from your home and donate them to the CUSD school of your choice. FEBRUARY IS DENTAL AWARENESS MONTH: Thank you to Dr. Nooshin Majd, DMD Orthodontist for her sponsorship of the BESF and for giving us some fun facts about Dental Health: For school-age children, Make sure to brush and floss with your child each morning and evening. It is important to floss the back teeth where there are no gaps between them since this a common place for cavities. The first permanent molars erupt behind the baby molars around age 5 – 6. Normally, none of the baby molars have fallen out yet when the six-year-molars come in. It is important to brush these molars thoroughly especially on the chewing surface to prevent cavities. Young and erupting teeth have the fast-growing cavities that destroy tooth structure and reach the middle part (nerve) of the tooth where a root canal treatment is needed. When your child is in 4th and 5th grade, continue to make sure that they brush their teeth every evening and every morning. The older children get lax in their dental habits and then mom and dad end up paying for it later on.
