Not What it Appears Art Exhibit
Bob Rickerson, Gallery Director of The Saddleback College Art Gallery is pleased to present Not What it Appears, a group exhibition on Symbolism, on Monday, September 12th through Thursday, September 29th in the Saddleback College Art Gallery. Even in his “Blue Period” Pablo Picasso used Symbolism in his paintings of harlequins, paupers and clowns. Symbolism is not only limited to the visual arts but also can be seen in literature, poetry, music, philosophy, theatre and early motion pictures employed symbolism in their staging and set designs and had a huge influence on Expressionism and Surrealism in painting.
The five artists in the exhibition include: Colin Roberts, Deborah Davidson, Holly Topping, Roger Whitridge and Trine Wejp-Olsen. The Symbolism used by these artists in their work is not mainstream emblems but intensely personal, private, and obscure with often ambiguous references.
