Saddleback’s Speech and Debate Team Takes 7th Place Overall at Nationals!
The Saddleback Speech and Debate Team competed at the 2016 Phi Rho Pi National Tournament from April 5th to the 10th. Co-director, Heidi Ochoa, states “The thirteen competitors that were invited to this tournament demonstrated the qualities that Saddleback College and surrounding employers seek: strong communication, critical thinking, and leadership skills.
I am incredibly proud of these particular competitors because they worked hard, they digested criticism well, and they handled both their wins and losses with grace. I can’t wait to see them grow these skills into their professional and personal careers. “ She commended other team coaches Shawn O’Rourke, Lucas Ochoa, Mark Dorrough, Angelica Grigsby, and Aaron Fullman for the exemplary work they did with their students.
The students this year spoke about timely and socially significant topics, including: stigmas about gays in athletics, faculty shortages in special education programs, high rates of doctors’ suicides, and the need for “white” alliances in racial discourse. Heidi further stated, “At the end of this year, I can say with confidence that the Saddleback College Speech and Debate Team ensures that all of their competitors become strong advocates!”
