San Juan Elementary Students & Sponsors

Ninety 4th grade students from San Juan Elementary School, San Juan Capistrano participated in the Ocean Institute’s Watershed Lab & Cruise Program on March 16. The students were sponsored through the Institute’s Adopt-a-Class program; they learned about the importance of being good stewards of our ocean environment and how pollution adversely affects it.

The Institute partnered with seven organizations to present the event, including the City of San Juan Capistrano, CR&R Mercury Disposal Systems, Ortega Rangers 4H Horse Project, Rotary Club of San Juan Capistrano, Goodwill Industries of Orange County, Mr. & Mrs. Ransom and Dr. Mark Sayed, Orthodontics. Special guests from these organizations for the day included Larry Kramer, Mayor Pro Tem-City of San Juan Capistrano; Ziad Mazboudi, Sr. Civil Engineer Environmental Division Manager-City of San Juan Capistrano; Rachelle Paris, Community Relations Coordinator, CR&R, and Chris Dunn, Dr. Mark Sayed, Orthodontics.

During the lab, students learned about scientific techniques as they performed fish dissections, conducted water chemistry tests and recorded weather data. They complimented their lab research onboard the R/V Sea Explorer, where they formed research teams to test offshore water chemistry, conduct bio-assessments of the sea floor and take a plankton count.
