Lessons learned in the history of mass shootings in our country have led first responders to reconsider how they approach a crime scene when the gunman is still on the loose.
In this day and age, saving lives has become a shared priority with capturing the shooter.
On March 25, Saddleback College Police along with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, Orange County Fire Authority and the Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) will take part in an active shooter exercise.
The scenario will simulate active shooters on a college campus with campus police, law enforcement and firefighter/paramedics responding to the incident and lessening the impacts of the attack.
The daylong exercise, which is closed to the general public, is designed to establish a learning environment for participants to execute response plans, policies and procedures and to implement multi-agency coordination among community partners to familiarize responders with their roles and responsibilities in planning, preparing for and responding to an active shooter incident on campus.
The drill will focus on mass search and rescue operations; on-scene security and protection; operational communications and coordination; and public health and medical services capability.
To create a realistic environment, volunteer actors will serve as the victims of an active shooter. The training is meant to help first responders prevent and respond to any violent incident.
