Vision

San Juan Hills High School is a nurturing community that inspires all students to thrive in the midst of high expectations.

First Week of School

Thank you to everyone for a great first week of school. SJHHS appreciates so much everyone’s patience as we work through schedule changes, traffic challenges and other issues that arise at the beginning of every school year.

Students who do not have a fifth or sixth period and are leaving campus before the end of the school day must show a copy of their schedule and their student ID card in order to leave campus. We will be issuing stickers to be placed on their ID cards in the coming weeks and, at that point, will no longer allow schedules to be used for leaving campus. Students are required to have their SJHHS student ID card on them at all times when on campus. Students who lose their ID cards may purchase a new one in ASB for $10.

Students have been attending discipline assemblies this week to review some of the more important school rules. Please make sure you discuss with your child issues related to attendance, dress code and behavior expectations. During the warm weather we sometimes have to remind students that it is not summer anymore and that they must wear clothing that is acceptable for school. We appreciate your assistance in knowing the dress code and in making sure your child arrives appropriately dressed.

Please remember that students will receive a reminder with their first tardy that they need to get to class on time. That reminder is in the form of a detention. We have ten minute passing periods at SJHHS, so students have more than adequate time to get to class. The bulk of the tardies we have are in the morning, because of students arriving late to school. As traffic settles down in the morning, it will be easier for families to plan better when they should leave for school. Still, there is construction occurring both at the Ortega overpass and around the La Pata and Ortega intersection that will continue for the duration of the school year. Please plan for the worst case scenario each morning and leave early enough to accommodate bad traffic. Generally speaking, families who approach the La Pata and Ortega intersection by 7:30 a.m. should have no problem getting to school on time.

Library

The library is open to students starting Monday, September 16 from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Please check all your textbooks for any prior damage.  If your textbook damage is already notated on the inside cover, there is no need to report it again.  All damaged textbooks must be reported to the library by October 1.  You will assume financial responsibility for any damages that are not reported so make sure you bring them into the library immediately.

Fall 2013 – Schedule Change Procedures

To initiate a schedule change, students MUST complete a GREEN “Class Schedule Change Request” form and return it to the Guidance Office for review.  Until the Guidance Office has reviewed the form, STUDENTS MUST CONTINUE TO ATTEND THE CLASSES ON THEIR CURRENT SCHEDULE.  Schedule change request forms are available in the Guidance Office.

The academic advisors will review the green Class Schedule Change Request forms they receive before answering emails or phone calls. The best way to communicate a request is to submit the schedule change request form.

Please note that students will not be seen during class time, unless called to the Guidance Office. Academic Advisors will be available to speak with students before school, during break, during lunch and after school. Students who have completed and turned in a schedule change form (including parent signatures) will have priority.  Students who have not completed a schedule change form will not be seen.  Requests will not be accepted by phone or email. Please note that Academic Advisors may take anywhere from 48 to 72 hours to review schedule change forms depending on the volume of forms received.  Completing and turning in a form does not guarantee that a change can or will be made to a student’s schedule.

Conditions for changes that will be considered include:

  • Missing Subject (i.e. no English, math, science, PE class, etc….)
  • Missing Period  or Double Period (i.e. no class scheduled during a particular period or 2 classes scheduled during the same period)
  • Concerns regarding level placement for English, math, science, social science and world language. (Excluding math for 9th grade students)
  • Adjustments for athletics/PE

Conditions that WILL NOT be honored include:

  • Teacher requests
  • Period changes

Elective Class Change requests also require the GREEN Class Schedule Change Request Form to be signed by the student and parent and submitted to the Academic Advisor. Class changes are permitted ONLY if space is available and the change does not drastically impact the remaining classes on the student’s class schedule or the school MASTER SCHEDULE.

Students must attend ALL listed classes on their current schedule until a change is confirmed in writing by their Academic Advisor.
