SCRD is proud to announce half time entertainment provided by Tanya “MsTooney” Jordan, who is the current Ms Fitness Southern California 2010.
Over its 100 year history (arguably longer by some) Roller Derby has experienced a multitude of boom and bust periods in popularity. Most recently in 2000, in Austin, TX a resurgence of interest in Flat Track Roller Derby occurred. In 2004 the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association was formed, and today there are over 78 member leagues across the United States and Canada. It is no exaggeration to declare roller derby the fastest growing sport in the world.
“We killed it ladies. We didn’t just hit it out of the park, we hit it out of the solar system,” declared Christy Wilson aka Chris Cross, league president and co-founder of SCRD at a league meeting following the inaugural home bout May 22, 2010 against HCDG (Hidden City Derby Girls). “We’re still running final tallies but we easily had over 350 people.”
Roller derby is an all-female sport, and currently an all volunteer organization, dedicated to serving the community and empowering women. Roller Derby provides sporting entertainment for fans and supports charitable causes that impact the lives of women and children.
SCRD invites all fans, potential skaters, or just the generally curious to come out and see what all the fuss is about.
